That would completely solidify our top 4. Gio-Brodie Russell-OEL. And Wideman could be bumped down, while provide offensive punch on the bottom pairing. Talk about a defense corps!
But how on earth do you get the Yotes to bite on a deal for him?
I think it would take something like: Backlund + Wotherspoon. I could see the Yotes being very interested in what Backlund brings. A steep price, but you give to get, and we have even more centre depth coming up the ranks with Bennett next season.

You spelled Gaudreau wrong.
Seriously, 1st pairing dmen dont go for peanuts. Bennett, Monahan, Brodie, Johnny, etc. Those are the type of players Phoenix would ask for. We wont be adding another 1st pairing dman

OEL has been struggling this season as well. I certainly would not be inclined to pay way over the odds for him.

What you consider "way over the odds" is market value for a 23 year old first pairing d-man. He still has 5 goals and 7 assists this year.
He was an Olympian last year for a reason.

Just because he may be having an off season, does not mean the Coyotes are going to sell him low. Tons of teams could beat the Backlund + Wotherspoon offer... All 29 of them.

Exactly why we shouldn't be targeting a 23-year-old 1st pairing D unless they happen to be on the market at a bargain basement price for some reason.
We could afford to go for a 24-27 year old 2nd-pairing guy who has potential to improve. It's not as crippling assets-wise and probably suits the needs of the franchise a bit better. Some might say we already have a good young 1st-pairing D...

It's been a while wince backlund was in the line up but he is honestly better than granlund and was one if the best forwards on the team last season. Wouldn't give him up easily.
And I don't want to give up on baertschi... I look at guys like Phillip forsberg and nino niederreiter who are blossoming after their organizations that drafted them gave up on them. I just know that would happen with baertschi too.

Like it or not, a small sample on a very bad Coyotes team is not going to crash OEL's value. We certainly would not get him for an offering as paltry as Backlund and Wotherspoon.

A chronically lazy player on a terrible long term contract.
In short, the complete opposite of what the Flames are looking for.

Struggling for lik 30 games. On one of the worst teams in the league whose goal differential is getting dangerously close to Oilers-bad.
Aside from this season, OEL has been over a .5 PPG defenseman logging more minutes than Giordano does on average. All this and he is still 22 years old. Trust me when I say that the Coyotes haven't mistaken the player OEL is with the one they have seen for the last 2 months.

I think you're misinterpreting me; I like OEL. He's a wicked talent, but he'd cost way too much to acquire. Why pay over the odds for anyone? This franchise is hardly in a desperate position.
I hope Treliving continues to build through the draft, but when opportunities arise to improve the team I hope he gets maximum value for the pieces he feels he can afford to move. That's the rhetoric he's spouting, and I hope he sticks to it.
Splashing out all your assets to acquire someone like OEL is sort of the opposite of that philosophy. Doesn't need to happen. Nothing against the player at all, despite the fact he's had a rough year.

I was never making the point we should break the bank for OEL, I was stating that Backlund + Wotherspoon will never get a player his caliber or even Yandle for that matter.

Not sure everyone sees him as a solified 1st pairing d-man. At least not yet.
To me OEL is still a second pairing d-man on a good team right now.
I don't think everyone sees him how you do. There's equally as great a problem with people overrating other teams' pieces as there is with people over valuing our own.
I was brainstorming that those two could be part of the deal, but in thinking further on it, not that they would get it done. But I don't think someone of the significance of a Gaudreau would have to be added. That's ridiculously over valuing what OEL is.

Unless something has drastically changed, the internal viewpoint is probably still that they're in asset accumulation phase. I doubt they move many picks.

They want a top 6 forward for Yandle. How about Glencro—

A 3rd line centre and an AHLer for Oliver Ekman-Larsson? Already a #1 NHL Dman, who has yet to reach his prime?

OEL is a first pairing d-man, easily.
There are very few teams he would be playing on the 2nd pairing.
You're really undervaluing him.

2nd pairing defenseman on a good team? For one, Phoenix is a terrible team. I noted that earlier when their goal differential was Oilers-esque and they sit amongst the bottom of the league right now.
As for OEL, I dont know many 2nd pairing defensemen who are logging just shy of 26 minutes/night (6th in NHL - above PK Subban, Alex Pietrangelo, Duncan Keith, etc.)
Are you sure you arent confusing OEL with Yandle or, i dunno... Marc Staal?
Sorry, but OEL doesnt go for anything short of Monahan, Bennett or JG at this point. Not saying I would do it, but I think I am a little closer to Ekman Larsson's value than you are at this point, if you think he is on par with a Kris Russell...

He's had one year of Denis Wideman-like numbers, while carrying a negative +/-. Otherwise nothing outstanding yet. Has not broken out in his all around game like a TJ Brodie yet. Is not a Doughty, Pietrangelo, Letang or Keith yet.
2nd pairing d-man. 1st on the Yotes cause they have no better options.
See how opinions work? At least I tried to explain mine. Instead of "he's easily this, you're wrong."
Derp derp.

I believe the gist of that proposal was to move up in the 1st round and a chance at one of the elite players.
Interesting proposal actually, as far as fan proposals go.
