Awful? Seguin is a budding superstar who could win the scoring title this year. He was 4th in league scoring last season with 84 points. Oh, and he's 22 years old...

If Calgary had a 22 year old centre leading the league in scoring and the tables were turned, would you make this trade?

Anyway... it would have been far from awful I think!

Acquiring OEL would go a long way in securing a playoff spot for this team.

That would completely solidify our top 4. Gio-Brodie Russell-OEL. And Wideman could be bumped down, while provide offensive punch on the bottom pairing. Talk about a defense corps!

But how on earth do you get the Yotes to bite on a deal for him?

I think it would take something like: Backlund + Wotherspoon. I could see the Yotes being very interested in what Backlund brings. A steep price, but you give to get, and we have even more centre depth coming up the ranks with Bennett next season.

Would you trade Klimchuk + Sven + 2015 1st for OEL?

Like everything, it depends on what the who's and whats are.
28 other teams beat the offer quite easily, imo.

OEL is considered one of the best young d-men in the league.

Id love to have him, but we would need to at least give up one of Monahan/Bennett for them to be interested, imo.

I always bring this guy up, but it kind of makes sense; TJ Oshie.

Don't think that gets it done but take it and start the car if it does.

Blues are in win now mode. So I don't see any type of deal making sense between the two teams.

I would love to pry Alzner out of Washington. Would be a very good middle pair guy.

Will the comically-lopsided trade proposals never end? I mean at some point people who post these things realize that they never happen. Right?

Have they ever stopped in the last 15 or so years that this site has existed? No. Why would you expect them to stop now?

Gotta love how these threads just turn into a bunch of guys just picking names and random draft picks

I'll go for Duchene for Baertschi, Klimchuk and a 2017 first

What do you all expect? Why does it bother you so much? We're all just spit balling here.

Dreger chimed in on a similar subject this morning on TSN radio:

Quote:
“But the Flames management continues to tell us that, ‘Look, as good as it is, we’re not thinking of doing anything drastic here by way of making a blockbuster that’s going to improve our chances this season.’

“That’s not to say that Brad Treliving and the group aren’t going to consider changes or trades that are going to make this team better for the long term.

“And guys, when I think of teams where Brian Burke is associated, you know, I think of the deals that he has made in the past that have made a difference. Obviously in Toronto it’s Phil Kessel.

“If the Calgary Flames could identify a good, young player that is going to fit into the growth of that team moving forward, then I think that we always have to have Brad Treliving and the Calgary Flames on our radar because of that. But I don’t think that we should expect anything dramatic that is going to bolster this team for this season. They may not need it, based on the way they’re playing.”
I have to wonder who Treliving might class as an expendable asset. Who isn't going to be a part of this franchise going forward, but still has enough value to land a decent asset?

Based on the emergence of Jooris, and promise shown from Granlund and Ferland, you'd have to think it's Backlund and Baertschi.

It might take dealing both in a package to get one good piece back.

I disagree.

I think Guadreau and Monahan have shown that they have similar potential to Seguin. Maybe not quite as high but having two players that are "1st line to elite" is going to be better for the Flames than one elite player.

It wouldn't have been the worst trade in the world by any stretch but I'm happy we didn't make it. It's just easier for two very, very good players to improve the team than one elite player.

We don't need the Iginla era version 2.

Plus I'd take both of our guys' character qualities over Seguin's any day. Kid puts up numbers, but seems to have an ego bigger than the dressing room.

Didn't Backlund and Berglund grow up playing together in Vasteras? I wonder if he might be dangled in a package to try and pry Oshie out of St Louis. The Blues need to do something to get Berglund going, as he seems to be struggling to get points this season.

Backlund has been unfortunate to miss out on the teams' success due to injury and it would be pretty harsh for him to leave under those circumstances, but it it improved the team that has to be the priority.
