McKenzie: Flames won't hesitate to add a big name player
http://www.nicholsonhockey.com/worth...enators-flames
Quote:
Bob McKenzie was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Tuesday afternoon.
On the Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames being the two lowest-spending teams in the NHL, and how while there is criticism of that fact in Ottawa because they want to be competitive right now, it seems strategic for the Flames at the beginning of a development cycle so they leave room to retain the core as they age:
“Yeah, I think so... I don’t think they’re afraid to pull the chequebook out if it needs to be pulled out. But you’re right - they’re a fairly young team and as young teams get older, and even in fairness, again – there’s no question the Senators are where they are budget-wise because that’s where Eugene Melnyk wants them to be. But there’s also an element of there’s some young players who haven’t really hit their salary zenith yet and you’ve got to leave room for that. And certainly the Flames are doing that.
“But I’ll tell you what: If the Flames could make a deal to add a big-name player, I don’t think they’d hesitate to do it if they thought it if they thought it made sense long-term for the building of the franchise.”

I don't think that's a surprise to anyone- as long as Treliving holds the line on something that makes sense "long-term" rather than grabbing a pending UFA rental player or a huge, long-term contract that could handcuff them in the future.

As long as it's for a guy who can be a part of this team for the next 5 years and it's an improvement of course, I say go for it.
Only thing is I can't think of any player that has any value that I'd want to move at the moment.

The key is making sense long-term. The Flames aren't going to go out and add a rental player unless its a salary dump for the other team IMO.
However given our logjam of a few prospects in the same tier seemingly, we do have the luxury to add a more established player (23-28) if it makes sense for them to join the team's foundation.

We're still looking for a trading partner that will trade their quality player for our quantity prospects.

The part that's totally going to get lost when this is discussed by media and fan forums for the next two weeks.

Wasn't it rumoured the Flames could have had Seguin for Baertschi + when he was traded from Boston?
Anyways, hope that the Flames don't do anything too drastic as they should continue to find out what they have with the current players/prospects.

The rumour was the pick that turned out to be Monahan and Gaudreau.

The only thing that could make sense is getting a 25ish year old defenseman from somewhere. If the Coyotes are needing to cut payroll, I would target Olivier Ekman Larsson.

Pretty sure the rumour was the flames' 2013 1st round pick (Monahan), gaudreau, and baertschi for seguin. No thanks.

No I think it was rumoured Gaudreau + 2013 6th (Monahan) overall would have landed Seguin. I don't think I would do that trade in hindsight anyways, although at the time people were tantalized by the idea of acquiring him.
You can't say it would've been terrible. I mean he is the league's top scorer, on pace for over 50 goals, on a bad team.
But Monahan and Gaudreau combined could in the future far surpass what Seguin brings.

Probably not. He just signed a long term contract and has been somewhat terrible for him this season. You could possibly get him for a couple of decent forward prospects and possibly our 1st.
Would you trade Klimchuk + Sven + 2015 1st for OEL?
Like everything, it depends on what the who's and whats are.

I think that is getting a bit out of our price range. I think someone in the Coburn-Alzner bracket is much more attainable.

20 bad games does not wash out his performance the three years prior. No way does Phoenix take anything short of Bennett. They arent doing Sven, Klimchuk and a 1st
