Agreed, but a community with a gate and moat.....now we are talking.

A draw bridge would be better than just a gate.

Good call maybe also a bent entrance, create a tight kill zone.

north of 17th ave and west of 69th? That small division of Aspen?
IIRC, it isn't really gated. Also, I believe part of the huge fencing that you see was designed to block the view of the parking garage across the street.

Yeah, I live in Aspen, and I am unaware of an actual gate. There is one down in Discovery Ridge (one cul-de-sac), but that is about it.

Good point, I forgot about the one in Discovery. Right at the bottom of the hill and towards the river there is that small stretch that is fenced off with a gate.
I know someone who lived in the area when it was first built and knowing their story, the gate was 100% for security/safety issues. To say that all these people want is a badge isn't completely true.

There are a number of small, mostly townhome, gated areas in that part of the city (Strathcona, Patterson and Prominence.) I recall looking at a home in one of those gated areas many years ago but the HOA was crazy restrictive and it wasn't something that I wanted to deal with.

West 17 lofts?
I remember looking at those and prices had come down hard on them but I always thought it was strange that people could just walk into their nice common lawn area (with a fountain). Maybe they've finally fenced (and gated?) around it.

Hell, if you want to go gawk at where the rich people live, there are much nicer places in town that you won't need a magic garage door opener to visit.
If these people are going to be paying the upkeep for their moat and gate then I really don't care. There ain't nothing there I want to see or need to visit. It's not a good precedent though.
Going by the looks of the photo,it's going to be full of shallow, stagnant water generously fed by large, fertilized lawns. Maybe they'll call it the Blue Algae Canal in the future.

I wouldn't call the houses on Mckenzie Island McMansions.
There's some nice houses on there. Evergreen Estates or something okay, but not those.
Gate is useless there to though. Want to get the code? Ask any delivery driver.

Oh I'm sure they are nice houses and these ones are going to be nice houses. I just mean McMansion in the sense that they won't be anything particularly special. A 4000 square foot taupe house with a walkout is pretty swank, but it's not going to draw crowds.
My point was this isn't going to be some ultra-wealthy enclave that needs an island and a gate because people are going to be so jealous that they'll just have to get there to gawk around, as was suggested.

I mentioned it earlier, the gate is there to keep people out of the lake. There's a bridge that connects the island to the rest of the community. If there was no gate, outside people would be able to access the lake from there. This is much ado about nothing.

So all the residents of Mahogany that have lake access will also have access to open the gate to the island?

There's still the main entrance and beach house for the community residents. I thought you said your folks lived in a lake community?

Anything over 3000 sq. ft. built out of OSB is a McMansion.

Because that is the epitome of McMansions right there.
Cheap materials?
Check
Acquired the services of the architect who designs Super 8 motels?
Check
Bland, flat, treeless, horrible lot on a highway?
Check
The taste to money ratio is approaching undefined on that one.

Wouldn't that be the money to taste ratio?
