The vast majority of my friends and family live in the deep south. I'll gladly have a 45 minute commute in order to be 5-15 minutes away from the people I spend my free time with.
Why? Because I'm forced to go to work. It doesn't matter how badly I "don't feel like driving" to work, I have to go and I will. If I have 30 - 45 minute commute to hangout with friends or family, it's very easy to say "I don't feel like driving" and thus staying home and slowly losing that contact. It happens all the time with my friends who live in the north. Our "south group" hangs out multiple times a week where as we only see the friends who live in the north a couple of times a month cause it's such a hassle.
I guess I value my social life over saving some commute time.
Anyways... Gates N' Stuff...

Why do people keep whining about this 'hour long commute'? Not everyone works downtown.
When I lived in Cranston it took me 5 minutes to get to work. Even when I did go downtown it was maybe 30-40 minutes max. Maybe you guys need faster cars

However seeing as you aren't allowed to have anything motorized, to me that takes away the biggest benefit of owning one. I notice the plan shows for each house to have a dock; I wonder if anybody buying them would end up making an incorrect assumption about what they could dock there.
Even still, I guess you would have access to a kind of swimming pool; one that doesn't require any maintenance.

All the important people do.
Wait...I dont...
Anyways, a very large percentage of people either work downtown or have to go downtown regularly.
Thats why they put it in the middle...

I'd add that I live in Mahogany and commute to the west end of Inglewood every day...pretty consistent 30 minutes each way in fairly peak traffic. really depends what part of central calgary/downtown you are going though...

The idea of putting in a gate to keep others out - not stated but assumed to be riffraff - is very off putting. Who are these people afraid of?

What lakes/developments were those?
BTW, we have a lake, it's real, and it's spectacular.

Maybe they just want to be left alone? Some sort of status symbol? People like privacy and exclusivity.
Hell, if it wasn't so pretentious I'd love to move there. The murderous thoughts I have whenever some salesman comes to my door probably aren't healthy.

Yeah but you work 5 days/week and presumably visit your friends less so you're better off living close to your place of work to reduce the overall time spent commuting.

Explain? Why is Calgary any different than any other place with a silly gated community?

A 45 minute commute would really suck, but you're right it's all about your priorities (even outside of time like the cost of living, backyards in the inner versus suburbia, etc.).
If you're visiting your friends something like 3-5 times a week versus that commute, the difference is something like watching the full entire Breaking Bad series 5 or 6 times every single year rather than sitting in traffic.
I'd choose the shorter commute myself but that is a personal choice certainly.

Time wise, yes, but my point was that I'm far more likely to not feel like meeting up with my friends if they live far away.
Also, I despise pretty much everything about downtown life so that's a thing.

I would want to buy the island itself, plop one big house in the middle of it, build some guard towers and hire people to man them. I would want it to look like I am a super-villain.

It's obvious the real motivation for this community. Zombie attack prevention.
We are all gonna look silly for complaining when that happens.
Edit: Damn it Mad Cow already beat me to this point.

Not to mention that way, way out where they're going to be located isnt exactly 'Hobo Central.'
The 'Riff Raff' would need a freaking car to get all the way out there, at which point it seems to me that the gate would be more of a hassle than a benefit.
It wouldnt even really keep out solicitors. Who is going to try and sell photocopiers way the hell out there?
