I hate seeing this thread bumped. Makes me sad.
Our Rotty, Sadie, is only 6 but she is having a lot of problems as of late. Just yesterday my wife was telling me that her stomach was very bloated and quite hard and she was panting a lot. She's done this a few times in the past year and the vet can't figure it out.

I'm really sorry for your loss, Igster. I'm sure Igster is cheering for the Flames from afar right now.

As with everyone I hate seeing this thread bumped - but it also, perversely, gives me some comfort to know how much these wee animals are loved. I am so very sorry for your loss, Igster. Its the worst and the best decision you can ever make. Be proud that your co-pilot is no longer suffering. It is the greatest act of love.
(Trust me - you will get a pet again. Your heart won't not let that happen)

Ugh that really sucks losing two pets within 3 months, after a short/horrific battle with cancer and losing my dog, I still feel much the same way you do:

But hopefully one day many years down the road you think differently as you and your wife are obviously very good pet owners.

Oh man Igster... your cat looked so much like the one I had growing up. Sorry for your loss.
Unfortunately, I have to add to this thread. This spring, a friend had to give up her cats (allergies, new child, new home). One had to be put down then, but the other two came to live with me. Today, I had to put Picasso down. She broke a canine tooth that required significant surgery, and the vet trip revealed she also had serious kidney disease. At 17, I knew I wouldn't have her long. I was expecting more than six months though. The remaining cat, once the youngest of four and now the lone pet in the house, is 9.

You should get another Pet Igster.
The way you and your wife have loved your cat and your dog have given the pets a wonderful life - something a lot of pets don't receive at all as they end up passing away at the Humane Society or out in the cold.
Get another pet when you are ready. Honor and cherish the memories you made with your beloved pets, and make new memories with some other creatures who will be very fortunate to have you.

We adopted a border collie/lab cross back in 98 and had her for over 13 years before we had to put her down. After a couple of years - this September we adopted a german shepherd/golden retriever cross who is 2 years old - he will be making his first trip to Canada this Xmas. Hope he likes the snow!!

Sorry for your loss Resolute. We took on a very sick 17 year old cat a couple of years ago. I thought we would only have him a couple of weeks but he graced us for six months. It was no easier a decision to put him down - he had won me over heart and soul in that short time. Remarkable how these small creatures win our hearts. And we are the better for it. You will miss the most those that you have loved - but the memories are the richest.

Igster and Resolute, so sorry for your loss. It's an awful experience to go through with a pet, after 13 years of her presence my house felt very empty when my last cat died. We have two now, one is 2 and one is 3, hopefully we have many more years with both of them. I still miss Carmel though.

Tks all. And yes, they make it tough almost immediately. In my case, her former owner has been one of my best friends for 14 years and was a former roommate. I knew Picasso for most of her life. It was one of the big reasons why I took them in.
The other one hasn't clued in yet. He looks around periodically when doing things like eating and wonders why she isn't there, but he definitely hadn't realized that he is on his own now. Today might change that, as this workday is the first time in his life that he will have been entirely alone with no other human or cat presence.

Yup. Igster was sure lost the first little while when Max was gone. He finally got used to it, but as you all know, only for a short period of time. Really wonder if some of the issues with him were the fact his health started to go downhill after being left alone? We had Max for about 2 months before we got Igster so they pretty much grew up together and were never alone. Sucks for the animals as well to lose each other.
I still am having trouble this week and I'm sure it will continue, to come home to an empty, dark house with no one to greet me at the door. I've caught myself looking out of the corner of my eye trying to see what Igster is up to before I remember.

My cat passed away tonight.. I'm in tears and just got finished burying her a few minutes ago. As of late she was losing weight and as of the last few days she wasn't eating and that was extremely odd. So we tried soft food and she started eating again. Katie gave her soft food this am before we left for work (she always had a bowl full of kibble) I went to feed her again and check on her at 9 and I brought her food into her and she wasn't in her igloo. So I searched for her since she liked to hide and she was dead. I am in tears, I know it's a cat but shes like a kid to me! I had her for 13 years! I just wish that I had her put down a few weeks ago because I fear that she suffered.
I cant stop crying! I feel like I lost a parent, I am just lost right now...
RIP Porsche! 2001-12/3/14

Very sorry for your loss. I hope this helps a little, it helps me whenever I think of the two dogs I've had to put down over the years
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow;
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush;
I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight;
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

You gave her 13 years of a wonderful life. 13 years! Such a precious looking girl. You will have such wonderful and amazing memories of her. I am so very, very sorry for your loss and your sadness. Grief is all part of healing. Let it run its course. You have had a bad shock as well. Don't let anyone tell you it was just a cat. It was your Porsche! Take care.
