Ava is an old school name (e.g. Ava Gardner). I like most old names, and if I don't like them, I at least appreciate them as respectable names. It's the new fandangled ones that I can't stand. The worst part is I think less of the kids with them. I know it's petty, but I can't be alone. Saddling a kid with a ridiculous name is a huge disservice. Stick with the classics, yo.
Really? That's kind of messed up.
What's in a name? I'm not sure why people care so much. My wife hated my youngest son's name when he was born, but now it's hard to imagine him with a different name. It would be like that no matter what we named him .

You're not alone. Any kid with the first name Xavier puts me over the top, especially if the kid isn't French.
I have always been partial to the old school names too. Always liked the names Eddie or Johnny if I have a boy one day.

Well think of how many times you use the name in reference to your children? There are studies (no, I'm not going to look for them,) that show that the sounds in a name have a direct impact on the kind of person they will grow up to be.
If you named your child 'Happy', they would grow up to be happy. If you want mellow children, give them a mellow sounding name, not one with harsh syllables.
It actually has a HUGE impact on a child in their developmental years.
Mind you, there's the whole nature vs nurture argument but I've never met a Barbie who wasn't a bimbo. Children grow to develop a personality reflective of the name they're given.

Yeah, those names are the best. When he's a little dude running around, he's Eddie. If he's going to be Prime Minister or run a multi-national, he can be Edward. Plus, Edward just looks good on paper. It's respectable. It shows his parents weren't complete tits, which says something about his roots. If I was looking at resumes and one candidate was Edward and one was Jaxxon, Edward would get the job every single time.

I have nothing against the name but I just find it puzzling why everyone is all of a sudden on the Ava train. Usually there's a popular at the time actor or music star behind the popularity but this one is a little out of left field.
My 5 year olds name is Ava. We just like the name and she would always kick when we called her by it so she sort of helped choose it.

Old names or new names who cares.
When we picked our kids names, I thought about how they would look on a business card or in a professional setting when the child grows up.
It actually won me an argument with my wife on a name she wanted.

There are studies for everything. I read a study once that was similar to what you are saying, but it was also countered with the study that certain names will be more predominant in certain social circles. So really, the name was an effect of the social upbringing, and the nature of the child is also an effect of the social upbringing. Tying the two together as something causal is probably a mistake.
Oh, I know a Barbie that's a well-grounded young lady, and she's even blonde.

How did they control for upbringing and their environment ? Seems like a pretty shady study.

Hard to control things like that in sociology but IIRC, they did personality studies at various ages in various schools, (private, public, etc.). Boys with harsh sounding syllables in their names regardless of school environment all scored higher on aggression scales, etc.

I don't necessarily believe that. Are there even many if any children that were names Barbie at youth? It's just an abbreviation for Barbera.
I find it hard to believe that if someone named their son Adolf (I don't think you can in Alberta at least) that he would grow up to have an unhealthy hatred of the Jewish.
