Flames keep the freeze
Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving has decided to continue Brian Burke's custom of widening the holiday roster freeze.

While the league's official freeze will go Dec. 19-27, the Flames will go Dec. 12-27, adding seven days to the window when trades can't happen, Treliving told ESPN.com.

This gives us a week to pry Iggy and tangs back from Colorado.

Why on earth would we want to do that?

We got rid of Tanguay because he sulked and whined until there was no other choice and Iggy just signed in Colorado for 3 years.

I assume sarcasm but my detector is on the fritz today.

I bet Jooris, Gaudreau and our 1st this year could make that happen. Get to it Treliving!

Or just one week to find a replacement for KHL-bound Backlund.

Am I right that it's just a no trade period, and that guys will still be sent to the AHL as players come off of IR?

That's right, not trades, depth moves still happen.

I really don't think management makes a lot of moves this year. Maybe moving out a vet or two that don't fit into the system and have been outplayed or injured.

It is a no trade, waiver and/or loan period. However, players may be recalled if a roster space opens up and players may be sent down to the AHL if a player is coming off LTIR and the demotion is necessary to be cap compliant or not exceed the 23 man roster.

The media always made a big deal about Burke's extended trade freeze. Do any trades actually happen during that week anyway?

Its a bit of a big deal. I mean, it offers security and reassurance to players and their families over the holidays.

I dont know about you, but I stress out over the Christmas 'holidays.' I used quotes there because there is nothing holiday-ey about Christmas, its more work than work and I find its among the most stressful times of the year.

But an extended roster freeze really takes some weight off of people's shoulders.

How much weight? Well, thats likely an individual 'advanced statistic,' but I'll bet a lot of players are very grateful for it.

Its one less thing distracting them from the game.

According to Friedman, Chicago was really interested in Joey MacDonald last season but had to go trade for LaBarbera because the Flames were already in Burke's roster freeze.

I 100% think it's a great thing, I'm just wondering how many trades have historically happened in that time period.

Joey Mac leaving early would have been a Christmas present to everyone else.

I wonder if other GMs would make ridiculous proposals to Treliving on Dec 13th, just to poke a bit of fun at the trade freeze.

"Hey Brad, I'll give you Crosby for a 7th, but the deal's off the table after Boxing Day."

I imagine a future 7th rounder doesn't fall within our definition of our roster. I think Crosby will fit in well here.
