I just love this team speed!! I remember so often watching the country club guys dither with the puck, looking for it in their feet, taking waaaaay too much time trying to figure out what to do next. So frustrating!

This whole team is playing with blazing speed. The Sharks are a fast team and the Flames looked quite on pace with them the whole night -- in fact the Sharks never really looked overly dangerous to me. The 'Yotes - well the Flames were a step faster and showed it all night long. They are such a pleasure to watch!

Even when they lose they work and (mostly) skate. How they lost to the 'Canes I can't figure out except that they were at the back end of a long trip and must've been gassed. Very uncharacteristic.

Hartley has done a wonderful job!! Glad to see all the boys playing together and the old guys enjoying their enthusiasm.

And because they are skating hard they are not taking minor penalties.

Flames are

2nd in the league in least # of times shorthanded at 64
1st in the league in least Total PK time at 100:49
2nd in the league in PP minus PK time at 29:02
6th in # of times on the PP at 85
8th in PP time at 140:21

and they have played more games than most teams.

The flames have gotten away with a lot the last few games. A Glencross waterski here, a trip there, etc have not been called. Some of that is because we aren't chasing all the time, but we are certainly getting the benefit calls over the last couple weeks

Not to take anything away from him. Two shutouts in a row in the NHL is an amazing accomplishment. But those last two games show that it takes a full team effort to earn a shutout.
It is a total team effort. The goalie is only as good as how the support players play. They might be able to steal some games by themselves and they might messed up a game by themselves but most of the time if defense and forwards play well then the goalie play well.

How does that compare with other teams, though? Is it only the Flames getting beneficial calls? I imagine it mostly evens out but I'm not sure.

The first reaction to numbers like this is that they should normalize.

But I again go back to the way they play defense.

The Flames collapse and try to block lanes with their sticks.

When the other team has the puck in the corner, what the Flames don't do (as much as most teams) is attack him one on one with physicality - which is probably the most likely situation in a game to draw a penalty.

On the offensive side, if you skate, you will draw penalties.

Once again, are the Flames an outlier due to style of play? Or will things normalize?

Such a fun - and fascinating - year!

God, I love this team. That was pure domination tonight.

They are playing exactly how I expected them this season. There was no denying how much depth, skill and speed we have. Other teams just can't match our speed and intensity. Mix that in with skill.... man, this team is killer.

I was really high on Ferland when we did the prospect poll. I was disappointed he was rank so low by CP. Glad to see he's playing the way he can. He's only going to be better, much better.

I'm sure it evens out, the there's no conspiracy here. Just pointing out that we're in one of those streaks right now. Not sure it's indicative of anything though. We've only had 6 penalties on the last 5 games. That's unsustainable!

I think this team might surprise a lot of people. The depth we have is hard to match. The coach, roster and prospect development system are better than most of the league.

When the coach, the captain and affiliate teams all work hard, buy into practicing at the pace of games and believe in 5 man defensive/offensive units great things can happen. It's the same message at 3 levels and it's simple to comprehend. People point at shots for shots against as out problem but it's not, we have won games shooting more because we allowed shots from the slot and had defensive breakdowns. We've won games shooting less by forcing shots from the outside.

What will hold the team back from being real contenders is our weakness in the faceoffs.

Face offs have little correlation to winning. They certainly help, but they aren't much of a barrier to success. If we fair poorly, it will have little to do with face offs. My guess would be defensive depth if anything is our Achilles

Calgary is 12th in goals against and 7th in goals for so that's fairly decent, we might lack depth beyond what's on the starting roster but what we have is decent.

The Gaudreau goal is some of the finest Flames work I can ever remember. 5 man defensive coverage where every option is covered by atleast 1 guy, as soon as the puck is turned over the entire team starts up ice synchronously. 1 perfect break out pass and 1 perfect lead pass then a perfect shot, good luck defending against that.

Nice to see him cash that one in. He was very close to slipping it in 5-hole on the breakaway in the first period.

I have a feeling he's going to flip a switch pretty soon and we'll see a lot more goals from him. He's been pretty pass-focused thus far but once he starts shooting more I think the flood gates will open.

Has anyone noticed the speed in which JG pops out his mouthguard post goal / assist / shift? It's instant. Those guard skills

Funny you mention that, because when I was watching the replays of the goal last night what caught my attention was him popping his mouthguard out & in while crossing the blueline with the puck. At least that's what it looked like at the time, it's hard to tell from the clip above.
