Yeah... but teams can retain up to 1/2 salary and cap in trades so you could still offer him to someone at 1/2 price. Frankly, I can't think of anything anyone would offer that would be worth 375K.

I don't know what was wrong with Seto, but he's got some soul searching to do down there if he wants to remain in pro hockey. It's hard to figure out how a recent 40 point scorer and ex 30 goal scorer can just flatline like that.

I would hazard a guess that hockey is something Setoguchi is good at, but doesn't love. It's not an uncommon thing - he just happened to be good enough to make 10 or 12 million dollars before he was emotionally finished with the game.

waivers have nothing to do with one way/two way, but with experience (games played, age). One way/two way just dictates what the player is paid in the minors. One way = you get your NHL money even when you play in the AHL. Two way = you don't.

One way/two way contracts don't matter when it comes to waivers. All they affect is the salary the player makes in the AHL. One way contract they make their NHL salary if sent down, on a two way they make less.

One-way vs. two-way only determines salary in the minors. Waivers is determined by the number of years he has been a professional.

Edit: What he said.

its been said before but hats off to the Flames for doing business the right way.

They brought in Setoguchi, Hiller, Raymond, Engellend and Diaz instead of releasing press statements suggesting all of Granlund, Bennett, Gaudreau, Wotherspoon and Ortio were "ready" and almost assured of making the team.

With the way Wotherspoon, Granlund and Ortio played last year they easily could have gone the other way.

Instead they put veterans in spots and make kids beat them out. In the case of the goaltender and the dmen they've played well enough to avoid being forced out. In the case of Setoguchi he's been passed by too many players.

Expectation management is so important. You can't give spots away unearned.

Totally agree. To me what's more impressive though is that "expectation management" has been attained t through consistency in who got called up, and who goes down. No one can question any decision so far

agreed. If he goes in with the attitude that he just needs to work his way back and get his confidence back, it isn't a terrible thing for his career. Just gotta try to find some motivation.

Not sure what happenned to Setoguchi. He was good when he was playing for San Jose especially in the playoffs. Once he moved to Minnesota and got injured he hasn't been the same since. Then going to Winnipeg did not help him either as him and Claude Noel was butting heads all the time. Not sure if it is mental (just lost confidence period). Maybe he needs a new start where he can be a goal scorer again and be the star. Maybe the AHL will help him get his confidence back. Good luck Setoguchi!

Wish him the best .... had high hopes for a fellow Taberite ... hope he can turn it around at some point and continue playing professionally somewhere. If not, always the family farm.

Good of Treliving to compliment his work ethic and effort. He basically said of him what some have said about Sven. He was a points getter and those guys get uptight and squeeze the stick when they don't produce.
