Thumbs up 2014-2015 Outdoor Rink Thread

Well, first major cold snap of the year, so I thought it was time for this thread. With overnight lows of -20 and daytime lows still below zero and I'm wondering if the communities will be (or already have been?) flooding the rinks yet.

Please feel free to post updates in here.

I haven't had a close look yet, but will try to give an update on the Willow Park rink later today. Will also check out Haysboro, Fairview in the next day or so!

Good thread to ask this question.. I moved over by Signal Hill this summer and there is a rink about a block away from me. Anyone have any experience playing over here? I have high hopes for it since it is so close.. hopefully they keep it in good shape!

Spoiler!

I haven't been there in a few years, but they used to take excellent care of it. Lots of kids though.

I'd expect some rinks to possibly do some flooding this week - but it is supposed to be warmer on the weekend and it does seem early for the ODR.....

I am willing to bet a few of them will be open by the weekend. Not to early, maybe for the lakes, but this weather is prime to start freezing them up

Highwood - up and running for several days already, recreational ice on the grass to the east side of the rink will be up today as well.

Chinook Park rink is up and running. My boys were playing there yesterday, said it was a bit brittle still but they had the nets out and everything.

Bit different, but this is the first year I have put a rink in the backyard.

It is 20'x30' and should be frozen solid by tomorrow.

Got to get the lights up this week, then net out and we can be skating on it.

I think it still might be a bit early for the ice too - hovering around zero here for the next few weeks I think.

On another note, I am moving to Douglasdale shortly - is there a rink around there? I think I heard they flood a field area (no boards). Is this any good? Anything close by that has boards and nets? I've never really lived in the area and google maps is hard to try and pick out these kinds of things.

Hey future neighbour. There is a rink in the field across from the gas station, next to the golf course club house. I haven't used it in a few years but, they had real nets and real boards, plus a shack that you can put your skates on (warm up). When I used it there was hardly anyone on it.

Given the forecast this week, I think you're right. A little too early for outdoor.

I used to live near Douglasdale and the rink was really good there. Haven't used it in about 5-6 years but it was one of the better ones in the area.

Awesome to hear there is a good rink nearby. I don't really get out as much as I should, but good to know there is a great option in the neighbourhood.

How is it too early if there's already outdoor rinks up and going already?

If you can live without boards, Stanley park rink is amongst the first up in the city, its been open for several weeks, and its a huge ice surface

The Rosedale Community Center rink had begun being frozen before the warm weather hit us. I'm assuming they'll resume/complete the freezing this weekend

Might not be considered deep NW but I'm going to be checking out the Varsity Community Centre rink tonight. I saw the flood lights on around the rink last night.
