Friedman's 30 Thoughts - Nov 21
Stuff on Johnson's bankruptcy, gm meetings and the following trade rumors:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...ue-to-johnson/
Quote:
19. Adam Lowry had a terrific story about lining up for a faceoff against Eric Nystrom. “He turned to me and said, ‘Are you (Dave’s) son?’” Lowry said. “I told him I was, and he said, ‘(Bleep), I’m old.’” Dave Lowry coached Nystrom in Calgary.

3. Would the Oilers part with Martin Marincin if he could bring them someone who eases their issues down the middle?
4. Obviously, Edmonton has nothing to say about that, but here’s what I suspect the team may be thinking: Mark Fayne, Andrew Ference and Nikita Nikitin are signed for at least another season. They have a lot invested in Justin Schultz. Oscar Klefbom is ready for an extended look and Darnell Nurse could be there next year. They desperately need a centre and what they’ve offered so far isn’t getting a sniff. If Marincin could bring back value, there might be a match.
5. I’m a Marincin fan. I like what he’s done in short bursts. There are execs/scouts who disagree. One who was not a fan in his draft year said last week, “He has come a lot farther than I thought.” So, we’ll see.
6. Another team dangling young defenders is Pittsburgh. The Penguins were already interested in a winger, and that increases with Pascal Dupuis’s absence. Asked a few other teams about their prospects, and the one who stood out is Derrick Pouliot. Would Pittsburgh really do that? He’s 20, first year as a pro, with 11 points in 12 AHL games. Can’t imagine it would be cheap.
7. Another exec on a second Pittsburgh prospect, Scott Harrington: “He’s different than their other young defencemen. He’s more of a solid, stay-at-home player. I could see there being interest in him. But, you wonder how important they consider him because he’s different than the other ones they have.”

In what world is Martin Marincin worthy of fetching a quality NHL center? There is no way he could fetch a 2nd line center unless a team is just looking to get rid of a bad contract.

Yeah, I've never been all that impressed with Martin 'Zdeno' Marincin.
Hes serviceable, and probably Edmonton's best defenceman, but thats just saying hes the shiniest turd in the bowl.
Much like that one GM, the general opinion of Marincin was pretty low. Hes done better than expected, but thats also on the Oilers so it has to be taken in context.
Him alone is not going to net you anything better than maybe a 3rd line centre or a prospect that may one day be one.

#19 no Adam Lowry made me laugh, wasn't it just yesterday that Nystrom was at rookie camp?
Also honorary please get us Pouliet or Harrington for Glencross. (I actually like Glencross and think he is still playing great, but I wants defenseman)

What 2 forwards would you deal for a Hall, Eberle or Yakupov?
I know most of us are not fans of any oiler but at the end of the day, any one of those players would help this team once they bought into the system. I cant see it taking long to by into any system as there isnt one they need to forget in Edmonton.
We almost have to many forwards at this point where certain guys have shown that they are ready to make the jump but roster spots (once everyone is healthy) put a huge limit on this.
I think that Hall is a all star on nearly any other team so rank him a 9.5-10 (and I dislike him the most but much of it has to do with what Edm has turned him into). Yak a 8 and Eberle an 8
Sven and Glencross or Sven and Wideman for Hall and a 2nd?
Stajan and Backlund for Yak and a 3rd?
Regardless, I would feel so bad for any flame who was sent to Edmonton

I'm relatively certain that the days of Calgary trading with Edmonton are likely over.

Was just going to say that. Certainly "bigger" name players anyway. No way Hall or anyone like that ends up in Calgary.

And the 'smaller' name players would have a snowball's chance in hell of cracking our lineup.

Darryl Sutter did a lot of good things in Calgary, but his legacy will always be tarnished by the fact that he convinced some people that trading with Edmonton is okay.
NEVER trade with Edmonton. EVER.

Considering how the last trade went it was win-win for both parties. The Flames acquired a 3rd pairing NHL defenseman and the Oilers acquired an ECHL goaltender and AHL center now playing in Russia. Flames are probably very happy with this deal and according to Oilers media they fleeced the Flames. Since reality is lost on Edmonton fans, media, and organization their perception is all that matters.
If I'm Treeliving I am probably anxious to get "fleeced" again in a trade involving a package of Ben Hanowski and Brad Thiessen for Klefbom or Nurse.

Even if Burke isn't the GM, I can't see him stomaching anything to do with Kevin Lowe. Also, given that the Oilers massively overvalue their players, I don't even think the phone gets picked up. Funny part is I don't think anyone in the league is picking up the phone when the Oilers call, or it is a very short conversation.

Yeah, no one picks up the phone from a 780 number.
Not to mention, at the moment they dont necessarily have anything that the Flames would want.

Burke and Lowe hate each other, so i doubt an trade would be likely, even with Treliving in between.

If we can stomp them in a trade and laugh at them later I'm in favour. Of course, it's even better to take their cast-offs and have them kill Edmonton in later games (see Glencross, Curtis).

The only way I'd trade with the Oilers is trading our 3rd rounder for their 1st and 2nd round picks

While true, I believe Burke was acting GM when he orchestrated the Smid trade.
