Brad Treliving on Sportsnet 960
update: audio available for download
http://pmd.fan960.com/audio_on_deman...-Interview.mp3
- happy with the points and where they are at the quarter mark
- record of the last 10 games vs the first 10 games
- 24 more scoring chances compared to the first 10 games
- shooting percentage is at a number that probably won't stay
- save% of goalies have dipped and still managed to get wins
- won't go big game hunting because of this record
- always trying to get better
- sometimes need to do small moves
- been able to evaluate young players while bullets are flying
- master plan doesn't go out the window, still looking at this long term
- you look at why we are having success - some of that is personnel based
- I would be lying if I said we would be at shooting% greater than 10% for the next 60 games
- if you do things right, you will get the results, we have to get better
- young players are now playing instead of just trying to survive
- starting to settle in our game
- when we play fast, we are a hard team to play against
- every team tries to establish an identity in the early part of the season
- there is an identity for this team - a hard working team
- Flames may have taken advantage of teams still struggling to find their identity
- in mid November a lot of teams address their deficiencies
- Flames have banked a lot of points, allowing them to not view the next 60 games as an enormous mountain
- don't think serious injuries for Russell or Jones
- end of next week can start talking about timelines of when Colborne, Raymond, and Stajan come back
- hopeful that a few names will join practice next week
- Backlund is a funny one, tried to limit him in camp, struggled through first few weeks just needs to shutdown and recover
- Kerr asks if Jooris and Granlund will force a tough decision: Jooris and Granlund have passed every test, earned the coaches trust
- both have pushed for jobs
- still a handful of guys in Adirondack that are pushing for spots in Calgary
- Glencross has supported the young guys behind closed doors. e.g. mentoring
- Glencross leads the team's forwards in ice time and creating offensive zone chances
- Curtis wants more goals than he has
- need more production from Setoguchi
- he has been more involved and more engaged, seeing it more and more
- but end of the day we need more
- Hartley contract will take care of itself in due course
- been nothing but impressed with Bob
- people look at the start and record, but for me it is the preparation
- always positive and teaching
- not surprised that Monahan is playing like a number 1 center
- told him at the start of the season there will be more expectations and opponents would pay more attention to him
- he is the one true center with NHL experience right now
- seeing a young player mature - there will be dips and valleys
- he does things that young players don't typically do - his defensive instincts and poise are not normal
- being deep down the middle - center men can make wingers better, they pull the lines along
- having too many centers is not a problem
- Bennett is progressing "good"
- some players you have to kick in the rear end to get them going - if you ask Sam he would probably say he could go tonight
- he is getting full days in - nutrition, strength training and rehab
- Hitmen look independently at their trades of the Flames
- Flames will share opinions and information about players
- by no means did Flames influence or drive Kanzig trade
- depending on lefty/righty, fit and or need on which defenceman Flames call up from Addy
- specifically mentions Potter and Wotherspoon are playing well
- Kulak demotion to ECHL was not a punishment

Gosh. That's some smart talk from a GM. Left his Flames-coloured glasses at home today.

Good on 960 for not lobbing Treliving softball questions.
The responses on Glencross and Setoguchi were pretty honest and interesting.

yep. Not really surprising though, Treliving just seems like a down-to-earth, very intelligent guy IMO.

I especially like the part about long-term planning and not going big game hunting.

On Hartley's extension said both BT had to get to know Bob, but Bob also had to get to know BT. Says he has been nothing but impressed with Bob.
BT implied a contract renewal can be expected in due course.

[QUOTE=sureLoss;5012286] - Bennett is progressing "good"

On Bennett - reading between the lines, it seemed like his recovery is going very well and maybe on a faster track than we realize. He is already doing full days of conditioning. Very encouraging.

Ken King fiddled too much on the hockey side of the operations for too long, but when he did step aside, the structure he invisioned and hired Burke to fulfill is certainly exciting.
Treliving seems to be doing well, but having Burke to fall back on, for a plethora of things, is a great system.

Thank God we have a GM like Treliving at the helm. Haven't felt this confident in a GM's ability since 2004.

Thanks for the notes sureLoss. Your commitment to calgarypuck.com is invaluable to the Flames fans using the site.
I'm glad to see that Treliving is cautious in the way that he characterizes the team. They're playing above expectations and I'm glad to hear that the plan still isn't changing.
But, I can't believe that Johnny Hockey wasn't in the conversation. What's up with that???

You're going to have to get used to this.
Johnny is Johnny. Hes small and quiet and generally goes completely unnoticed until hes finished handing you your ass.

It was interesting that when BT talked about Glennie it was with a very positive tone. He said Glennie has been creating opportunities in the offensive zone (hinting he believes more goals will come if he keeps this play up).
Plus as Sureloss noted - lots of behind the scenes mentoring of the kiddies.

That is the interesting quote for me. Some of us were discussing this in another thread. The injury really should be a blessing in disguise in many ways for him. I would bet that his maturity, his conditioning, and his leg strength will have all taken a quantum leap by the time he is cleared to play.
Plus, just being around the team and learning how to be a pro is a huge benefit.

the whole Glencross talk was interesting, he talked about a stat called "offensive zone chances" and that Glencross was their leading forward in it and is creating many scoring chances and not just off the rush
