I though Johnny played really well the last couple of games even though he had no points. he's so smart with the puck.. and some of the puck battles he wins against larger guys... amazing. He really is a great two way player.

Johnny Gaudreau will need to cultivate himself a new address. After spending the first six weeks of the season in a downtown hotel, the 21-year-old has been advised by Flames general manager Brad Treliving to find a more permanent place to stay.

“I’m pretty excited I’m getting a chance to move here and get out of the hotel a little bit and start living here,” said Gaudreau, who sits fourth on the Flames with 12 points. “It’s good to get out of the hotel and get a place and just have a more homey atmosphere now.”

He’s got plenty of candidates for roommates.

“I have a few options,” Gaudreau said. “I just don’t want to live by myself. I want to live with a teammate and I think it’ll make it a bit easier for me in my first season here. There’s a few options for me here. I’m just trying to figure it all out right now.”

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound forward could end up with Russell. There’s a chance he ends up bunking with Sean Monahan and Lance Bouma, too.

Russell isn’t sure if he’ll end up with a new roommate, but is happy to see Gaudreau earn a permanent stay with the Flames.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I think he was just told. The decision is to be made. I’m happy for him and I’m glad he’s got that opportunity to stay for the year.

“The first few games I thought he was really good and there’s a few feeling out periods. I remember my first year there was a lot more that I went through then he’s going through. He’s done a really good job. The few games he’s had to realize how he has to play with his size but I think he’s got his game going.

“He’s got great speed, great vision. He’s definitely an asset on our team.”

Hartley on TSN 1200 this morning:

Quote:
Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley was on Ottawa's TSN 1200 on Friday morning.

On Johnny Gaudreau:

“He has been unbelievable, guys. Such a nice young man to work with. I would say as a young player - I was fortunate. I had Milan Hejduk. I had Chris Drury. I had Alex Tanguay. I had Ilya Kovalchuk. I had so many great young players to work with in their first years of their NHL careers and Johnny comes in and wow.

“Like, his foot speed is so unbelievable in tight areas. His vision is as good as I’ve ever seen. This guy... sees, or imagines, or invents passing lanes like not too many players in this league can do. And his speed is pretty amazing. He’s learning the pro game. He’s adjusting very well. He’s obviously very popular in our dressing room. Players love him and everything, so I think we’re just starting to see flashes of what Johnny Gaudreau can do in this league. He’s going to be a real good one.”

Even though his game last night wasn't his best, I notice he almost never just loses a or throws away the puck. He always does something with it. Sometimes his linemates aren't thinking in the same number of dimensions, but generally if he's stuck, he gets the puck to another Flame.

Sad that he didn't get credit for a hit last night to get rid of that goose egg. Turned out to be a two on one the other way where he almost scored.

Ha anyone noticed how much Hartley praises his players? Constant, constant high praise. Interesting tactic. Never a "he needs to be better" tough love comment

I've noticed that too, any failures are kinda addressed as a team. Very fond user of the word "we".

One has to wonder how long that works though. With a young team that's fairly new and exceeding expectations, it's probably a genius strategy. Confidence is the best attribute for a developing player. However, what is he like when poop hits fan and the team takes a night off?

Love his positive message right now though. Right message, right audience, right time. I'm interested to see how his approach evolves with the team and how successful it is. The younger generation thrives in that type of messaging. The "do it or don't play" message doesn't resonate with gen Y. I'm curious what is seen with a negative message. I suppose that's the benefit of having a Gio around to hold people accountable too

Public talk is public talk... I'm sure different things are discussed behind the dressing room door. I doubt Hartley is making balloon animals and telling everyone they are great 24/7 in the locker room.

True. He's even admitted to being a bit of a porcupine at times.

Well that's the point, right? He may be a dick to you in private, but you're all still his guys. Hartley is like your dad. He's the only one who's allowed to call you an idiot. Anyone else does, there will be trouble.

That has to endear Hartley to the players.

I'd be willing to bet that young Johnny would like to live with Monahan n Bouma but management would prefer he stay with the slightly older, more mature Russell. I mean really, how much trouble could three young millionaires possibly get into?

Last thing you want is 3 early 20s millionaires becoming bar stars. Agree that Russell is the best path.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that any of Gaudreau, Monahan, or Bouma would have an after-tax net-worth of more than a million dollars yet. They have more money than me, for sure, but I don't think they're actually millionaires.

Impossible to know but Monahan could be - $925,000 salary per year plus signing bonus of 10% and may have hit a bonus for 20 goals last year plus any endorsement money.

3 young millionaires living together. Isn't that what every episode of Oil Change is about?
