Top line mins (21+) and going 54% in the dot isn't 'not doing much'. Under the circumstances he had an extremely strong game overall.

Same night in Philadelphia.

EDIT: Meh. Playmaker beat me to it in the Edmonton thread. That's what I get for sleeping during the night here.

Still. Some jokes get better in repetition

Sven has had 3 professional coaches, Hartley, Huska and previously Ward. Really, its not the coaching, he simply does not have an extra gear.

If he can't step up to the plate, or if his confidence is lacking, is that the guy we want on this team? Thats why he gets to sit when the bench is shortened, thats why he is getting passed on the depth chart by other, younger, more eager players.

So, back to the game eh. Jooris = Keeper, speed, tenacity and skill/finishing ability. Gio & Brodie outstanding as usual. Gaudreau, not his best game, but with the puck on a string, wow can he stop time.

It takes a lot of discipline for me not to check the results before I get to see the game :-)

Sven gets a shot and is lined up with Setoguchi who has not impressed at all. Sven has shown to be almost .5 ppg in various limited services whereas Setoguchi has failed to show in post SJ stops that his success can stand on its own merits without Thornton. He has had little chance to prove himself.

Jooris's interview is refreshing. I much prefer hearing a rookie talk about winning close games being necessary for getting to the playoffs than the previous coach saying that the team can't score off the rush. That was defeatist loser talk.

I like the bigger picture and hope that Sven powers through it, because he has the talent and there can never be enough of that if the guy can find his role

If Sven has all of this talent, when the hell is he going to start showing it? We haven't seen examples of it since the beginning of the season two years ago. He certainly hasn't shown that in the AHL. Now, was that .5 PPG a result of him being in a situation where he couldn't help but score points, or a result of him actually being a talent and leading the play? I think it was more the former than the later. Whichever it is, it's irrelevant as Baertschi has to show he has that skill on every shift, not just once or twice a game. Gaudreau is threat every shift. Granlund is solid and produces in both ends. Jooris's engine never stops and it creates energy. What exactly does Baertschi do? It's not like he's setting up his team mates for opportunities they are not cashing in on. He's doing very little out there and he's noticeable by not being noticeable. That's all on the player.

Those that point to Sven's offence (which he hasn't shown this year), and want him on a top line forget about his D. At this level you need a more complete game. Thinking all offence, putting together lines with skill but no defensive aspect - that's Oiler thinking.

Nickname for Jooris is not needed as Jooris itself sounds like a nickname.

Sven is not a plugger he needs to play with skilled player; Nothing given earned was forgotten about for a bit when Jooris/Sven/Ferland were sent down. Its not written is stone, you have to look at how you can best develop your player. You think Tom Wilson who's playing with Ovie and Backstrom earned that out of the camp? no, he was injured spent couple games in the minors and there he now playing with their 2 best players. Him playing 7-8 minutes is doing no one good. Put him with Monahan an let it fall on Sven, if he runs with it great if not you cut your losses and send him down.

You could make the exact same argument for Setoguchi. A points guy who needs more time and better line mates to help his confidence. If only he had those he'd break out. In fact, he has a better history to base that on.

Interestingly the flames now have some roster decisions that might impact him though. he can't be a 3rd line player when it has to be a checking line because we dont have enough skill, but if people get bumped from the lineup and we can have a skilled 3rd line, he might find a home
I think Baertschi has every opportunity to play up in the top 6 right now if he shows he deserves it. When Jooris was called up, he started on the bottom lines and then last night had top line ice time.

I do think Baertschi's biggest problem is between the ears though. He strikes me as the kind of player that expects things to come easy. He has enough skill that if you put him with a superstar, he would probably put up quite a few points, but as a go-to guy, it isn't going to happen. Perhaps he and Setoguchi have a lot in common.

No he really didn't. He was out of position a tonne, got pushed off the puck easily and generally looked lost in the defensive zone. O.T Is where he picked it up. I gave him his first compliment in the GT in O.T Litetally 10 seconds before he scored. He didn't have an "extremely strong game".

The arguments about Sven needing top 6 minutes or to be put with better linemates to prove himself fall flat when you look at a guy like Jooris who has proved his worth no matter where in the lineup he plays

How about Sven do something to earn that instead of just being given it. Jooris was on the 4th line and scratched one game, he came back playing better and was getting OT ice time. Gaudreau wasn't doing anything to start the year, his ice time was decreasing and he was scratched. He came back playing much better and is getting big ice time and PP time (when not sick).

If Sven was showing anything, I'm sure they'd give him a chance. They aren't playing him on the 3rd line to be jerks. They are playing him on the 3rd line because he hasn't shown anything to be moved up.

Agree 100%. For an NHL spot, this is what Baertschi has to compete against.

As a Flames fan, of course I want him to succeed. But at some point, the excuses have to stop. I forget who said it, but one one point he was a 7 surrounded by 3's ... now he is a seven surrounded by 9's and a couple of 10's. Different scenario for him now and he better get it figured out, or his NHL dream may be over soon, not just his Flames dream.
Friedman was on (think Monday) and mentioned that people around the league were extremely surpised that Baertschi got called up .... the 3 people Friedman talked to basically said he had done nothing.

Warrener this morning was not very complimentary of Sven and his work ethic.

He really hasn't done anything worthy of getting called up for. He is still living off the goodwill of being a 1st round pick.

I almost wish he never had that emergency call-up from junior a few years ago where he lit it up in the few games he played. I can't help but think that went to his a head a little bit.
