This is his third full year as a pro now, the time is now on a rebuilding club. If he can't make this work I wouldn't hesitate to say he is done as a Flame.

That's a little ridiculous.

agreed. too many people focus on a few bad trades, for good reason, but the drafting and development that started when he came in gets ignored too much.

I guess the part where I said I think he still has potential wasnt good enough for you. Plain and simple the guy has shown very little consistency at the pro level to this point. That's fact. I know some of you use every excuse in the book as reasons for why but to me and others here those excuses are wearing thin. He has all the tools to be a good player but it's time to start putting it together. Does that mean I think he's a bust? No, but I think we should start judging him more on his pro hockey career than his junior career. Another average season or two and then what? Time to start showing he can play.

Brodie was an AHL all star in 2010-11 and had 20 points in 35 games during the lockout. He looked OK.

He got it together eventually, yes. There was some concern for a while that he wasn't panning out.
Playfair on T.J. Brodie, who was a healthy scratch: "Not playing well enough, not doing what's he's told."

Sven has to show Brad and Brian that each game he is up he is noticeable and improving a bit more each game.
This is his audition and he has to impress.
Sure getting points helps but i think they want to see, does he turn the puck over or does he create take aways. Does he win board battles or not.
Last night Sven got chasing in his own end more times than the Flames would have liked to see.
Each game he has to get better in both ends. Just like Jooris and Johhny has.
If Sven gets sent down and someone else is called up instead it will be because the coaches are not confident sending him out there in the defensive zone face offs. Baby steps for Sven thats all i expect to see. A little bit of progress each shift will go a long way.

Friedman on Baertschi this morning:
http://www.nicholsonhockey.com/worth...schis-ahl-play
Quote:
“The timing of it was a little bit interesting for me because in doing my show prep on the week, I happened to speak to three teams that had seen him play in Adirondack. And the review on him was universally negative. They were like, ‘He’s not really competing hard, he’s not really playing that well.’ There were beginning to wonder what the future would be and as a couple of guys said to me there’s no way Calgary can be happy with this.
“The thing is, I looked into it. I’ll give the Calgary guys credit. They really stood up for him. They said, ‘Look, here’s a guy who is not going to be happy with going back to the American Hockey League. Here’s a guy who wants to be in the NHL, feels he should be in the NHL.’ And they understood that initially when he went back down to the AHL that he was going to be disappointed.
“What they really fought back against was the fact that he was a negative guy or that he was causing a problem down there. There have been teams in the past, who they get a guy in there American Hockey League team and if he’s negative, they’re like,’We cannot have this here.’
“Because I know Calgary feels they have some decent young players there. They don’t want negativity around them. So they really fought back against that belief. They said, ‘Look, he’s not scoring. But the idea that he’s been a drain on people or he’s being negative around people – we’re going to defend him against that because we don’t believe that to be the case.’
“And they said they felt in the last week he was starting to play better and getting going, but just wasn’t getting any luck.
“So the thing is too, and this is the thing I always check, is when is the player eligible for waivers. Because that’s usually when a team has to really make a call on someone. ‘Do we want to risk losing him for nothing?’ And I don’t believe he’s eligible for waivers until next season.
“So I think the Flames still feel like they have some time. I know there’s a lot of debate about whether or not he’s a Brian Burke player. But the one thing I learned on the weekend is that this team is really fighting hard against what appears to be the position from outside that this guy hasn’t tried hard since he’s gotten back to the American Hockey League.”

I think that sounds like a good analysis on what is going on with Sven. I really respect Friedman and I think he hit the nail on the head here. There is still time for him. He is only 22 years old. He really needs to show his compete level during his stint with the flames right now. Just play hard and show that he wants it at the NHL and if he is sent back down (I fully believe he will be) then he has to show the same level of compete down there. No excuses really.

I'm glad Flames brass is sticking up for him. But it has to be concerning that observers from other teams have a negative opinion of Baertschi. He probably doesn't have much trade value at this point if the Flames do decide he's not a good fit or they need help at another position.

What's everyone's opinions on how he played last night then? I only saw the first 2 periods, but he had a couple shots on goal and thought he hustled hard at times.. that's all I managed to see really.
What's everybody elses general consensus?

I thought he played okay for his first game up. He and Byron had a couple good chances but were a victim of Montreal's push back a few times. I thought Seto was just bad and many plays died on his stick.

Agreed Sven was mostly unnoticeable but ok. Made one nice pass for a grade A scoring chance.
Don't agree about Seto. I thought it was his best game of the year, was working hard and generating chances.

I'm not a Baertschi hater by any means, but I thought he was head and shoulders the worst player on the ice for both teams.
Unfortunately, I don't think he'll ever be a full time NHLer.
