Hopefully it's a relatively minor concussion. Man do I feel bad for the kid. He just can't seem to catch a break.

I can't find the video, but Grapes was talking about exactly this on Coaches Corner a couple years back. He was speaking to how the hard plastics are like being hit by a cement wall now compared to the leather and padding it used to be.

Elbow pads have been like that for at least 12-15 years. All of your gear, really. The knee pads, the shoulder pads. Anyone who grew up playing minor hockey in the 90s, 00s or had kids who did knows what I'm talking about. We were decked out in full body armor.

I wish they would really start cracking down on headshots, and not just because a Flames player got injured. Start suspending these idiots for 10+ games and maybe we'll see them start to show some respect for their fellow players lives.

Same infraction as his previous suspension, with the same punishment.
One might be inclined to believe that if 4 games didn't make enough of an impression to curb that behaviour that a stiffer penalty might be necessary to get the message across.

What a ridiculous hit. If AV is just finishing his check he needs to learn how to fisnish with his shoulder, not his mf elbow.
Ferland deserved a better start to his career than this, hope he's ok.

Yup. 4 games was no where near enough for a repeat offender.
Things won't change until that does.

Not much of a difference but I thought five was appropriate.

They need to start stacking the suspensions. Your last suspensions was 4 games? Okay, so the new hit is a 4 game suspension. 4+4 means you're getting 8 games. Another hit that warrants a 4 game suspensions after that? 12 games. Etc.

Was just about to post something similar
Edit: except I think I would suggest they keep doubling it: 4, 8, 16...

What a joke. No good seems to have bled from the Oilers into Player Safety. Four games, for a repeat offender + concussion? Travesty. Stephan clearly is using Shanny's Old Wheel of Justice cause this is way too short. 8 minimum would have been my call, but then I actually care if players get seriously injured, unlike the League apparently.

Not complaining about the amount of games suspended but I am still confused on how does Volchenkov got more games than Alex Burrows? Burrows' hit was worse than Volchenkov and he is a repeat offender. Was it because Ferland left the game and the guy Burrows hit stayed in the game? I still think NHL is inconsistent with the way he suspend players. Repeat offender should get more no more how severe the hit was.

One has to wonder if the suspension would have been longer if the injured player (or jersey) was one they recognized

Burrows isn't a repeat offender, IIRC.

Volchenkov is a repeat offender.
And Burrows has only been fined in the past.
And the injury issue.
Despite all those things, yes, the NHL is horrifically inconsistent with this stuff.
