The Felions (BC's cheerleaders) are all volunteers. They do it because they like it. A woman that works HR for the Canucks danced for years with the Felions and loved it. Still gets involved in appearances and gigs and wishes she could still dance.
I teased the lady that runs the ice crew for the Canucks about getting on the ice, they have men and women, and was told that I was not exactly what they were looking for. If anyone is interested in becoming an Ice Crew member let me know and I will hook you up. But be prepared that they might tell you, politely of course, that you are too old and fat for the gig.

The correct answer that would pass any test would be to hire the people that are the best at the job regardless of appearance or gender but most jobs hire attractive people over less attractive people given the same skill set. This is a societal issue and the ice girls is not the place to have the fight.
|
Except that there are jobs where being attractive is part of the qualifications. The Fire and Ice girls are essentially promo models. Good looking people sell products better as people are drawn to them.
It's human nature for people to want to look at good looking people. I don't get why we should feel guilty about it? Jeeze I'd HATE to live in the world the PC people envision.

Some people that look good like to show it off. There is really nothing else to it. When you see girls in the mall wearing tight shorts and skirts do you feel it's your place to ensure they can't wear those clothes even if that's what they like to wear? You are essentially no different than the anti-abortion crowd that wants to dictate what others can or can't do. It's not your place to dictate fashion as people should be free to dress how they want regardless of how you personally feel about it. You are free to raise your daughter as you wish but you can't take away others choices to suit your personal view of equal values which isn't nearly as equal as you think it is.
|
Can I change my vote for the overraction post of this thread.
At the end of the day people will do as they wish.
I am still confused on why the need to wear the "uniform" they do to shovel snow of an ice rink.

As a dad, it's more of a concern that she'll think she needs to dress like a skank in order to have boys like her.
But I suspect ice girls and cheerleaders won't be around much longer. Pro sports is a largely corporate affair these days, events where colleagues and clients go to impress one another. In today's corporate climate, it's increasingly awkward for men and women who work together to be exposed to anything sexual. It's just not a good idea for Mike in Sales to be ogling a scantily-clad 21-year-old while sitting next to Sandra from Account Payable.

Well, if they do it in Russia, it's gotta be okay. There's few better countries in which to be a woman, after all.

1. Fair enough
2. Hardly a "gross exaggeration". It is what it is, the direction of the changes is now egg shell walking and you know I'm not the only one that feels that way but i'll probably be the only one that states it

Why is a woman automatically a skank for wearing a short skirt?

Fair enough.
... dress in a far more revealing fashion than male co-workers in order to have boys like her.
Maybe if some of the ice girls wore skirts and some wore track pants it would come across more as a matter of personal choice and preference.

The others are probably mature enough to realise that change can be for the greater good and have moved on.

I'm not sure if CP members choose to ignore it or not, but the amount of advertising on CP is astounding and I imagine it comes with 6 figures of annual revenue and if not, very close to it. I don't think you just want to be telling CP members you don't need them because I'm sure these paying advertisers are expecting a certain amount of hits etc.
This forum may once have been a place where the owner and the mods made decisions based on honest ethics and principles and the desire to provide a great place for sports fans to come together, but with this amount of money involved, things like the YLYL thread going away are likely happening to try and reach new demographics to increase revenue.
I can't say any of this is certain or true, but when significant amounts money are involved, I have a hard time believing that the decisions are genuinely made for the benefit of society and not for the benefit of the owners' pockets.
Obviously if I had a huge issue with it, I wouldn't be a member here and I am completely on board with the forum making money any way it can. I just don't buy all the cuddly crap and and I get a good chuckle at it because I feel money is corrupting the genuine nature of the recent decisions.
