You guys are too hard on the team. Constant line shuffling, vets phoning it in, Gio having a bad game all made for the worst game of the year. We lost 4-1, that's not that bad, it wasn't the 8-0 beatdown from Boston from years ago. There was absolutely no line chemistry tonight. My guess was this game was Hartley testing Gaudreau, Diaz and Jooris to see how they respond when things aren't going well because it just seemed so disjointed and unorganized that clearly the team was not playing together. No need to abandon ship in one pre-season game.

No positives? How about Gaudreau receiving suicide passes at the blueline and spinning around 2 checks that would have left most players sliding on their backs. Backlund and Jooris having an impact nearly every shift, Raymond showing some actually decent play being sabotaged by his teammates making bad passes. Even Setogouchi showed flashes. We can't win them all, we saw that Johnny is ready for the NHL, Raymond has good positioning and can forecheck fairly well. They just need to keep Colborne away from Johnny as he seems to conflict with Gaudreau's style of play.

Prior history is a pretty big part of the process for NHL suspensions.

The Byron Sedin hit was worse and that got nothing. There wasn't even a major called here.

We'll see where the wheel of justice lands but I don't see a suspension.

If anyone paid attention to the anouncer on TSN3 the Jets are probably going to win the Cup after this game, and Kane is due for the conn smythe.

He was so excited about Kane laying out a guy he has 60 pounds on.

Time for the positives:

Johnny still didn't look out of place
Like the looks of Raymond
That wasn't the David Jones I remember. Maybe last year really was just an off season for him?
Kris Russell. But said

If Jones can stay healthy he's an effective 3rd liner. People just complain about him because he's just grossly overpaid.

Agreed. It was a salary dump Calgary had to take.

Yup. Butler syndrome. Looking worse than he really is because he's being put in over his head.

If you watch the replay Enstrom had his skates do a toe pick.

Here's the Backlund hit for anyone who hasn't seen it.

If you think this game was bad do you not remember the Minnesota/Flames games and Atlanta/Flames games from years ago where nothing would happen the entire time?

Sutter would purposefully play shutdown and try to win by 1 goal, now those were boring games. Even having a horrible game today I was atleast entertained, things happened, a few of the guys played hard. There are games from years past that were a 60 minute long blur of boring and stupid Telus commercials.

Carrying on the discussion from the GT thread

Agreed. And we've seen Grats do it numerous times last year. Monahan gets an ugly dump, Next shift Grats exchanges a few words with the guy, maybe lays a hit, and the other guy realizes he's going to get dummies and settles down. Lets get some more of that. He' really taken on that big brother role with Monahan, lets see that protector out there for the whole team.

Especially now that we've got guys like Bollig and Engelland that are supposed to be extra security. I know Engelland wasn't playing, but if the Jets are getting chippy, we had the tools to put an end to it. Instead we played right into it and let them get us angry.

The more I watch it the less and less dangerous it seems.

It was dirty and unnecessary. I'd be pissed if it was against one of our guys. Right in the numbers going into the boards and just plain not needed. If it was the other way I'd say give it a game or two as to discourage frustrated unthinking hits like that. You could tell he instantly regretted it and knew it was dumb.

A few players (Jones, Jooris) showed glimpses of good play at times but can't really say anyone had a good game. Backlund looked like the best Flame to me though, especially for his first game. Everyone else was pretty meh.

Going to be tough to use this game as an evaluating tool.
