Jooris had a great camp, as he did last year, but I see him as a guy with 4 points after game 24 playing 7 mins/game kind of thing.
He had a great camp, but Im not sure he is an every day NHL player by any means. Maybe he gets the chance to prove me wrong.

Jooris will start the season behind the bench, as assistant coach, on opening day.
Book it.

How were we able to sign this guy as a FA? Why wasn't he in the draft?

Like a lot of college players, he was a late developer. He didn't start his freshman year at Union until he was 20 years-old.
In his 17 year-old season, he was still playing Midget AAA. In his 18 and 19 year-old seasons, he played Jr A. By the time he started college, and got on the scouts' radar, he was no longer draft eligible.
Once he was in the NCAA, he couldn't sign an NHL contract until he decided he was ready to leave college. My understanding is that a lot of teams were interested in him, but believed he was going to play his senior year last season. The Flames were able to convince him to leave college early and got him signed just before he was about to return to school.

The Flames convinced Jooris to forego his final year of college by telling him he had a real opportunity with the organization. He has held up his end of the deal and he deserves to be in the lineup on opening night.

I don't think so considering the injured are making their way back, otherwise I think he would've gotten at least a game or two. Give him top 6 minutes in Adirondack.

Jooris has had a great camp. That said, with it looking like some injured veterans coming back in time for opening night, I think jooris needs to have another big game tonight in order to steal a spot.

I've seen plenty of players slowly improve after their 24th birthday (Paul Byron for a recent example), and you have to remember that last year was Jooris' first year playing pro hockey after a college career. If we have patience for other similar college graduates in their first couple of pro years (Gaudreau, Arnold, Agostino, Hanowski, Knight, Ramage), then how are we supposed to assume that Jooris is washed up after this year? You have the strangest ideas about prospects…or just hockey in general…that I have ever heard.
|
And you have trouble understanding that having a non-goon forward that is willing to fight is not a significant attribute. Forwards on the 2013-14 Flames who play hard enough to actually engage in a non-staged fight when Glencross was hurt: 1 Bouma. Cripes Stempniak stepped up to take a couple of severe beatings when he saw no one else would.
In direct answer to your question:
1) Byron made it to the NHL the same year as Jooris is now. If Byron didn't get a chance this last year as a 24 year old there would be a 90% chance that he had topped out as an AHL player. Right now he is in the AHL/NHL tweener category.... someone who would likely clear waivers.
2) Jooris is a year or 2 or 3 older than these other prospects.
3) There will much less chance for Jooris ( and the forwards on your list) next year with Bennett, Poirier, Klimchuck, and maybe the Flames #1 pick 2015 all in the age range where they should be NHL ready.

Doubt it. We have a handful of overpaid one way vets getting in his way (Seto, Jones).
I would think Bennett stays before Jooris. Bennett's the better of the two. Jooris lit it up the other night because he was playing with our 2 best players in the third period. Our two best players who might not be on the team!!! Makes zero sense.
Stick him with plugs like Jones and Seto and he doesn't get two goals. Sven's in the same boat. Although I'm not as sold on Baertschi as some people.

I don't think Setoguchi is in his way. I mean really, what do the Flames have invested in Setoguchi? Nothing. So he gets cut and sent down to the AHL and doesn't clear waivers. No big deal. Its not like we made a trade for him or gave up draft picks. We got him for free.
He wasn't a member of the Flames organization at the end of 2013-2014 season and its not big deal if he isn't here at the start of this season.
