With his added weight and size, Monahan is able to be more of a net front presence now.
If Johnny stays up, and plays on Monahan's wing, with his ability to work the boards and make seamless passes, I can see Monahan putting up more points than his rookie season, just by being in the right place at the right time, Johnny will find him.

The guys on Fan960 were hedging last night - I think out of fear of raising expectations too high, but settled on 45-50 points as a good target. I tend to agree. I'd like to see him at least stay around 20 goals, but improve on his overall point totals. What I am really looking for is improvements in the faceoff dot and in terms of stats that indicate possession (yes, Corsi and Fenwick). Though, of course, the latter also partially depends on his linemates.

I'm looking forward to Grat's reaction if somebody cheapshots Monahan this year. That's going to be a hell of a thing to watch.

Even if the goals stay the same (or even go down a bit), I'd like to see him improve on his assist totals and his face off abilities this year. I don't ever expect him to be a consistent 40 goal scorer, but I do expect him to be a very well rounded player.
Having said that, I also wouldn't be surprised to see him lead this team in goals this year.

Yeah... I am gonna go ahead and say I'd rather not see Monahan get cheap shotted. McGrattan will get plenty of opportunities to punch people in the face and I prefer those to not be a reaction to one of our young stars being potentially injured.

Either way, he's still junior eligible.

I believe in the Jays.
|
My expectations are that he put up as many points as he did last season while being a better player overall.
All the goals he got last year were nice but he got them while being gifted some pretty soft circumstances and he wasn't a good possession player. So my expectation is that he do what he did last year while improving as a possession player and playing harder minutes then he got last year.

I expect him to get around the same totals as last year, maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more.
I think the whole sophomore slump is about other teams knowing what to expect and getting tougher competition in the NHL.
The conclusive thing to be concerned with is that regardless of his statistics, I think he will be a better player than last year.

We should see his assists go up.
He was after all considered one of the best playmakers in the OHL in his draft year.

25-30 goals, much improved faceoff percentage, lighter in the assist department. Big time minute muncher.
Monahan seems like the kind of kid where a sophmore slump is not really going to be a thing for him. Too mature. Add to the fact that the spotlight will not be solely shone on him this year either. Theres another arriving to take that aspect of pressure off of him.

It all depends on the actual incident, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if McGrattan gave Monahan a shrug and a big brotherly "take care of that yourself" kind of look.
Or beast mode.
It's a coin flip I guess.
