Yeah the co-op adds to it for me as well, I hope the Division is similar in that respect because the co-op in this works pretty well.

So... just like any other MMO?

WoW was technically a half baked unfinished game. You got to 60 and then you had to grind the same two raids for 8 months before they added more. And guess what? It's been the same formula for nearly 50 patches and soon to be 5 expansions. Grind to max level, grind for gear then grind the raids. And when you're not grinding raids you're either grinding other characters to higher levels or you're grinding/farming to improve your professions, or you're farming/grinding to improve your gear or you're grinding/farming gold to buy things

So no, I guess I'm not expecting anything more than DLC/expansions to grind, though I expect a variety of things to grind for and places to grind in to change things up. Welcome to MMOs. Some hate them, some love them. They are what they are.

I hate the word grind now.

A lot the complaints I am hearing about it seem fairly whiney with personal (unreasonable) expectations being brought to bear.

For example, the recent Joystiq podcast has them all complaining about how it isn't as fully fleshed out as the Mass Effect trilogy or that it was outrageous that there isn't a cave behind the waterfall that they found and that their personal loot drops haven't been as good as other people. But they're ALL playing hours and hours and hours of it. All while telling people that they should just stay away for a year and come back to it then.

A full hour into the podcast they finally realize they should talk about something else and finally switch topics for 20 minutes and close it out.

^ What I'm noticing is that this is the first MMO for the console player. They're now experiencing for the first time what I did playing WoW back in 2005. The complete commitment to grinding levels and getting phat lewts but complaining the whole time doing it.

This isn't new to console players. This is what you did in Borderlands or even Diablo 3.

Also I take issue with WoW comparison. A major issue I've heard about this game is a lack of depth. Depth is a funny thing. Depth can mean lack of game play options, it can mean a lack of noticeable change as the game goes on, or it can mean a lack of story.

While you were grinding away in WoW, I don't think I would ever say it was lacking in any depth, despite the fact that as a progression guild you would be doing the same fights every week for a couple months. The fights were always enough to keep you coming back, the story was epic and immersive and you saw changes as you progressed (both in the toon and the raids themselves). It's why WoW is a juggernaut that no one can seem to replicate. They just did everything so damned well.

The grinding experience is a finicky thing as well. Why could I do 20 Mephisto raids a night in Diablo II, but doing another Butcher run in Diablo III seems like a ridiculous chore. One thing is off with how the game plays and the grind isn't worth it.

How can you call it personal when the critics are pretty universal with their complaints of the game? For the record I don't think the game deserves the ultra low 6 scores from Gamespot and Polygon and is closer to the 7.8 score from IGN which is a little higher than the metacritic average. If the game was really that great surely more critics would be on board but they aren't. Sometimes you just have to accept that what you like isn't considered as great as you think it is.

More like blues everywhere for everyone. Strike Playlist Tiger is just handing out 2-4 blue engram/items regularly.

Crap, didn't know about the engram changes and burned off a purple just a couple of days ago. Oh well, hope the changes help things out a bit...

Summary:
With this patch, we address some widely-discussed concerns with how Engrams are earned and claimed. Strikes have become more rewarding, and the rewards gained from them are more predictable. Also affected is the rotation of maps that appear in the Crucible.

Wouldn't have mattered. Changes only affect anything that drops after the patch and any purples you would have tried to keep would have been turned to blues.

Of course the reviews are personal, they are a reflection of the personal experience and expectations of the reviewers. Listening to a lot of the recent IGN/Joystiq/etc podcasts, people seemed to have had this hyped up expectation built up in their heads (even though there was an alpha and a beta).

I've barely had time to even open the shrink wrap myself but as an outside observer, it's almost the opposite of Titanfall (ie. high critical review scores but people try it out for a week or two and the player base is essentially done and gone after a month or two). Destiny appears from the outside as something fun and engaging and the player base (so far) doesn't seem to care that the critical review scores aren't sky high, they're too busy playing the game to worry about it.

Again, what I find interesting is for all the complaints from the various reviewers, they're all still talking about it and still playing it. As you mention IGN, their recent Podcast Beyond #360 talks a bit about the hype, how it didn't necessarily live up to it but it doesn't really matter, they're still playing, enjoying it, and looking forward to continued support for it. They mention Brad from Giantbomb summing it up pretty well:

https://twitter.com/bradshoemaker/st...36928671617025

Starting to feel like I'm on the high end of public opinion on Destiny? I don't think it's perfect, but it's all I want to play right now.

Not really worried about it being "considered great or not". It sounds like a lot of people are enjoying it and I look forward to giving it a spin as well.

After 110 hours? I'm not even mad, I'm impressed. PVP is probably the thing I enjoy most at the moment, it is a little more challenging, and I find it has a decent skill curve. I know they say weapons are all balanced, but they really aren't. If you have an exotic or legendary, you will definitely be better off. My favorite is going with some buddies as a group of 3, and trying the 3 on 3 game modes. We usually dominate because we all work together.

As a level 28 titan, the only things I find fun in PVE now are the weekly strikes with heroic modifiers. This part of the game is great. Having to actually generate a strategy and play smart is way more fun than repeating the same level 24 raid and running into the middle of action because there really isn't any consequences if you die. Your teammates having to revive definitely adds an element, you can't just go to the back of the map and wait 30 seconds for your teammates to respawn. I do think the bosses would be better if they could kill you easier, but also be killed easier. Shooting at the boss, hiding behind an obstacle, and shooting again for 30 minutes straight gets tedious. Overall, the basic game play and structure of this game is awesome, and addicting because you always want better stuff. However, for $60 I expect more than 4 raids that they expect me to do over and over. To get to level 28, I definitely did missions I didn't want to do, repeatedly. Also it needs to get some more interesting bounties. Perhaps ones where you have to complete strikes wearing green armor and below. Something to make it a little more challenging.

Even though I complain, I seriously just want to get home and play again. Definitely try PVP though, I think it is one of the better elements of the game.

I know StrykerSteve has his own Raid going on. I may be in need of one more for mine. Ideally 27+ and has a mic. No problem if you don't have experience.

Hah, Hemi-Cuda might be jealous of being in the wrong group. We got to Atheon relatively easy. Just couldn't finish him off and had to call it off at that point.
