An injury to Bollig, McGrattan or Bouma and I have no doubt that Ferland will be playing in the NHL this year.
I just don't see it if those three guys are healthy. You can only have so many of that guy in the role they play. The good thing is some AHL seasoning certainly will not hinder him in anyway.

Kind of disagree. I don't see Bouma and McGrattan as players in the same role. Bollig appears to be more towards Bouma than McGrattan, though I would like to see him in more games before passing judgement. Bouma isn't even a fighter - just a gritty and very solid defensive forward who can hopefully add more offence to his game.
Ferland is a guy who would maybe start on the 4th line, but who we hope turns into a great 3rd liner or hopefully a 2nd liner. He has more offensive upside than any of the players you are grouping him with, but can and will drop the mitts very well.
There is always room in a lineup for guys like this. I am not sure if he is NHL-ready or not, but would like to see him play a couple of regular season games against another team's full roster and see how he keeps up and looks out there.
An injury to any forward in the lineup may vault him into the NHL for a good look.

I forgot about only being able to shelter 900K of a big contract in the farm. Could we please get rid of Jones then. I'd much rather use his spot on the big team for one of Baertschi Granlund or Gaudreau, or even Reinhart/Ferland.

All I can say is that there is going to be some tough decisions going forward. After seeing the last couple games I think I can comment on some players.
Do you keep johnny up or let him get used to the game for a while in the AHL? Skill wise he's obviously there but can he keep it up for the full season, maybe if they sit him every 3 or 4 games to let him rest, just a little worried about the length of season as to what he's used to. I wouldn't be as worried had he come out of junior with the larger schedule but college is different and you know some of the bigger guys after getting burnt by him will try to squash him which could lead to big injuries or just a worn down body so resting him every so often in the NHL this year may be the best option for him. But who knows he may surprise me and be able to elude these large guys going after him all season long and not get worn down? Just that when he is tired during a long shift that is when the larger guys may be able to catch him making a mistake and really cream him.
Sven has looked much stronger physically and mentally, he is actually throwing hits, not getting knocked off the puck as easily, very good sign that he is maturing into the player we all hoped he could be. Does he make the team, anyone's guess but he is not making it easy on the coaches to cut him.
Sam, wow, not only is he skilled but I was really taken by his speed, I did not realize he was as fast as he is. The skill is there for him to play in the NHL this year but I don't think his body is just yet, I am still firmly in the send him back to junior camp even as impressed as I am after the one game. Give him a year to fill out some more and come in next year expecting to take someone's job.
Sean, although not a rookie I do think he deserves comment here. Well what can be said about him? I liked him last year but saw some flaws in his game, mostly foot speed and aggressiveness. He looks as though he has worked a lot on this part of his game, his first few steps are a hell of a lot quicker than last year, he is hitting and is not afraid to hold the puck and make a strong move. I don't know but he has made huge progress in his game imo.
Granlund, skill wise he's there, I know I am in the minority here but I still think he needs 10 lbs on his frame. He seems slight out there to me and I just worry that he may get hurt playing a full season in the NHL where you don't have the time and space like in the AHL.
Ferland had looked good to me, NHL good? Not quite imo but very, very close. I would like to see him back in the AHL for the season, get a full season of pro under his belt and then come in a compete for a full time job next year.
Sieloff, needs another year, missing last year set him back and don't think he is remotely close to baking into the bigs quite yet.
Reinhart, he's very close imo, needs to translate his game to the next level but I think he destined for the farm again this year. Will be one of the first call ups and rightfully so.
Arnold, looks good, needs a year or two in the minors before he's ready.
Agostino same as Arnold, just time, he may be ready next year for 3rd/4th line duties.
I know we all want to see our young guys get spots on the big team but by keeping most of them down on the farm, you not only build team chemistry going forward but you are also developing a winning culture that will not be a part of our NHL team this year. This winning culture can have a dramatic affect on the club in the future when these players are in the NHL competing not only for a playoff spot but hopefully the cup. There will be injuries and this is when you can get the kids some time up with the main club, get them some more experience with the size and speed, this well only serve them well for the coming years as they break into the league.

I assume so, but must have missed it. I'm sure we would have seen him in one of those games over the last 2 days if he is good to go.

I've been really impressed with most of our youngters, for the most part they've taken advantage of their opportunities to the best of their ability. At the end of the day, we'll see if its enough.
I think there is a strong case for Sven. While there's been a bit of a struggle with offensive zone consistency, there have been flashes of brilliance where plays have just died on other sticks. But what I like about his game is that his attention to detail without the puck is way way way better and I do like his actions in the defensive zone. I think this is the time where you reward him for his improved play.
Johnny Hockey. I'm not sure if sending him to the AHL would do much for him. I think it wouldn't hurt him, but I think that it would be too easy of a game for him with players being a half step slower. I've liked a lot of aspects of his game, he does seem to be snake bitten though.
Monahan looks like a completely different player out there, probably due to his size. He still has some defensive moments of sheer terror, but at least he's working on defense.
Ferland I wouldn't call his play timid, but maybe tentative, I like a lot what he brings to the table, but usually what happens when you bring a bully up to the next level is they need to learn where the line is and what you can get away with. I think that Ferland is still trying to figure out that line. I think he does have to engage in at least one scrap above his weight level in the post season.
Granlund big time ready nuff said
Reinhart The hockey IQ oozes out of this guy. You can see it. I think he's ready for that bottom 6 shut down, pk guy. I just don't see his offensive side of things. maybe its there I don't know. I think he needs to add more blood and guts to his game as well.
The goalies have been ok. But they don't seem to have that big save in them yet.

I saw a tweet after the split squad game that he had a "lower body" injury. The tweet also mentioned Setoguchi.
heard nothing since.

Was only able to catch the first last night but color me impressed with Ferland, can see him spending some time in the A but I think he's going to be a player sooner than later.
I'm not saying he is ready to light it up and has been perfect, but he has the tools and the toolbox.

A lot of positives in this game. I agree with most of what's been said, but..
I really hope they don't sign Diaz. I see too much Butler in him with the way he constantly gives the puck to the opposition. It seemed like everytime the Flames were hemmed in their zone for long periods, I would ALWAYS see Diaz on the ice. This guy doesn't have the offense to make up for his terrible defense, at least not in the Western Conference.
Setoguchi was somewhat noticeable in the offensive zone, but some of his passes were just plain bad with 0 effort put in. I'm not sure whether he signed this contract to prove people wrong or make his last buck in the NHL.
Baertchi deserves to start the season with the big club from what he's shown this far. He's done everything Hartley/Burke wanted of him in the AHL and offseason. I'm seeing a more complete player in all 3 zones so it would be a slap in the face to send him down after the dedication and maturity he's shown.

Ok, but what I'm saying is you have room for Ferland in one of the spots that McGrattan/Bollig/Bouma are taking up. Who else will you sit? In a perfect world Setoguchi and Jones wouldn't be on this team. I assume Baertschi and Gaudreau will be fighting over a spot already.
There just aren't enough spots for everybody that deserves a shot right now.

There's nothing wrong with winning the Calder Cup this year. I'm fine if we leave some borderline ready guys down, as long as we move out some bodies in a big quantity for quality trade later on in the year. I would love to see a good young D-man get picked up for forewards that already have their replacements all seasoned up and ready to play down in the minors.
