Default Flames Radio Voice Derek Wills [Article]

Another fantastic post by my favourite Flames writer Darren Haynes on Peter Maher's replacement. Good to get to know the guy before the season starts

http://flamesfrom80feet.blogspot.ca/...ot-sprint.html

Quote:
"So, I called Claude's cell phone. He answers and I said 'Claude, you left without me.' He said 'Yep, you were late.' I said 'What am I supposed to do?' He replied 'Not my problem' and hung up. Well then, panic sets in," recounts Wills, who was 25 at the time. "I'm stranded in Rochester, New York, I need to get to Cincinnati, Ohio, what do I do?"

"What followed over the next couple months was more interviews -- including a six-on-one board room interview in Calgary with executives from the hockey team and radio station including Flames president Ken King."

This should surprise absolutely no one.

Why would that surprise anyone? If anything, now that he's in charge of the business side of things, these would be the kind of things he should be involved in moreso than Burke.

After reading that article I feel the Flames have the right guy for the job.

I respect a guy who has put in his dues. I look forward to his calls.

I think that's what I said.

Sounds like a good guy.

I never listen to the radio play by play as I'm a visual person and need to watch it . I do expect to hear him at least during the preseason games as they did with matching the visual feed with Peter Maher.

Love the part about shifting gears. Thoughts immediately turned to Loubardias. Only two gears 1 & 6. Then there's Kerr's 6th gear - the pubescent school boy voice cracks. Wonder if they went to the same broadcasting school.

I think the point is why did you say it? Certain things don't require highlighting, and when people highlight said things, it's usually because they are trying to make a point. What was yours?

I think you are over thinking things. The highlighting came from the original story. Ask them.

Seems like every name is highlighted in that article, seems like much ado about nothing.

Not the highlighting of Ken King's name, but rather posting the quote in general. It seemed like you were trying to point out Ken King interference?

Wow. A conspiracy under every rock. Everyone's out to get us.

The season can't start soon enough.

Really like his play-by-play, but that article also made me like and respect him as a person.

Happy we got him! Going to make a great replacement for Maher.

This is also something that Brad Curle should read before every Hitmen hockey broadcast.

My concern is how familiar he is with Flames history and lore.

CP may need to do a series of posts on memorable moments, with clips, so he can come up to speed quickly.

Plus if we provide the right clips, it will wipe clean any pro-Oiler residue left in his noggin.

What FLames related posts would be required reading or viewing?

(AC Iginla clips come to mind)

I would assume the Flames are all over this, and he likely has access to the "vault" of history, and he has been expected to familiarize himself with it. Doubt CP involvement would be required to address this issue, but if people want to start posting some cool ####, I won't be oppose to watching it.
