A bulkhead seat is your best bet since upgrading is not an option. Put your carry-on on the floor in front of you and you have a nice foot rest for you to really lay out on.
A lot of people with young babies always try for the bulkhead since they have a spot to let the baby lay and sleep. I've seen where the flight attendant will ask someone in the bulkhead if they wouldn't mind giving up their seat for the baby/guardian. Always refuse to change seats unless it is to a better seat. The only seats better than the bulkhead are upgrades to business/first class.

Don't look at your watch every couple minutes. Watching time go by is the worst thing you can do on a plane. Load your ipad/phone with movies. Every once in a blue moon I'll get a plane that doesn't have TVs (Air Canada Rouge...) and it sucks balls. However having said that, Air Canada Rough seems to always be empty and last time I flew to Spain a couple weeks ago, me and my buddies all got entire rows to ourselves.
I personally prefer aisle seats since I can get up and take a piss every hour like I seem to do on flights. Noise cancelling earbuds are a must. Learn to sleep by pulling the food tray out in front of you and lying on it.
When I flew home a couple weeks ago, this one hot chick a couple rows in front was doing yoga stretches the entire flight at random intervals in the aisles. Everyone loved it. Try to sit by someone who does that.

Kindle, and a classic ipod for music. Battery lasts 10x longer than a phone, and so you have your phone battery when you land.
Also as suggested, a backup/portable battery charger.

Lots of movies for the iPad and a remote charger for it. I also like to bring a bottle of water and a snack or two. A hoodie is nice as well. pull the hood over your head and try to get some sleep if you get tired.

Books and more books it won't take long to tear through a ton of movies if you travel lots. I prefer paperbacks to ebooks so I can read while they go on about the safety features

Bose Quietcomfort 20i earbuds are amazing how much noise cancellation they create, their compact and the sound quality is decent. Love them so much better than the QC15's (big, bulky). You can have them in on takeoff and landing and if you nod off they aren't really in the way.
IPAD Movies or a good TV series I haven't watched. A paperback. Sometimes if it's work, that can take a good bite out of the time and when you return you are ahead of the curve.

Yes, because wearing jeans is just so damn high falutin'. You keep fighting the good fight there, captain sweatpants.

Ha, I don't even own sweatpants. I had honestly just never thought about how other people dressed on a flight or thought that there would be people out there that would, until you posted about it. That's all.

headphones, ipod, eyemask, ipad, kobo....those are my must-haves for entertainment...
also, wear or bring a sweater, depending on where you are on the plane will determine temperature..I always end up being cold, also comfortable trousers and shoes, nothing too tight....and water.

My advice to take or not when it comes dress. You are traveling for business so don't wear something you wouldn't wear if you were traveling with your boss.
Traveling for recreation...wear whatever you want.

I read the title as "fights" and was going to suggest staying outside of striking range.

And if you're a woman, don't wear nylons. If the plane goes down and there's fire (and you survive) the nylon melts like plastic right onto your skin.

Avoid sitting beside the heavies and choose the above instead

If you are going to HK, avoid air Canada as they have the high density 777 on that route....

out of curiosity do people generally prefer over the ear headphones or in ear earbuds on long flights? i've always gone with in-ear since i never had headphones but not sure now since headphones are so comfortable. only issue with headphones is that it's bulkier and might be difficult to sleep with them on (i like leaning against something to sleep)

I have a set of noise cancelling in ears just for planes. they are awesome even with no music on...reduces the ambient noise way down

I didn't entirely mind their high density plane going to HK, I've done that route a handful of times on their new planes, the seats may not be the greatest, but their entertainment is pretty good and has quite the selection, also lots of headroom, i could stand up in my window seat.
though, cathay is probably where its at for that HK route
