Evans by all accounts was terrible. The rest bar Januzaj have been told they are surplus to requirements.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has been forced to retire from football after a medical examination discovered that he had a heart problem.

The 37-year-old was hoping to prolong his career by spending the upcoming season at Serie A side Cagliari, but the Spaniard is understood to have been diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy -- a disease of the heart tissue that causes it to thicken and sometimes cause Sudden Cardiac Death in athletes.

Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini told the Italian press: "It was picked up in the first visits to Cagliari and confirmed after further tests in Padua."

Almunia's retirement brings an end to a 20-year career across England and Spain, in which he won the FA Cup with Arsenal and appeared in the 2006 Champions League final.

Yes I loved him. Watching them flounder was great last year and I look forward to more of the same this.

van Gaal had a very slow start at Bayern too. Their first three league matches were 1:1 at Hoffenheim, 1:1 vs Bremen and 1:2 at Mainz, plus they also lost twice against Bordeaux in the Champions League group stage. A somewhat slow start was to be expected, given that he just implemented a new system and the injuries have been ridiculous so far. None of the new players have been involved (except for Herrera who played 67 minutes vs Swansea) and none of the players involved yesterday (except for De Gea, Evans and maybe Januzaj, who played his second game within 48 hours) will compete for a regular starting job. I am not worried at all. In contrast to Moyes, van Gaal has the resumee to earn the benefit of the doubt. That being said, a convincing win over Burnley is desperately needed now to calm the nerves.
