And Treliving is saying the very thing I posted in the OP, everyone needs to earn their spot,
They run on Meritocracy and that's the way it needs to be, it's how teams get better.

Treliving on Setoguchi: "He'd be the first to tell you the last few years of his career haven't gone the way he's wanted."

Jason Deforest @FAN960Jason Treliving: "He's in terrific shape and he's dedicated. There's some low risk, in my mind, with some upside." #Flames

Jason Deforest @FAN960Jason Treliving: "He's eager to have some success and he's bought into the work ethic we want to have here." #Flames

Jason Deforest @FAN960Jason Treliving: "There's a reason why his contract comes in at what it does now, and that's sometimes a bit of a wake up call." #Flames

Jason Deforest @FAN960Jason Treliving: "This isn't a charitable cause. We're not looking to add guys from the 403 area code just for the sake of adding them." #Flames

I'm glad that people are pre-judging the 2014-15 team before a single skate has been laced for training camp.

Well, so much for the exciting season of watching awesome prospects, and more the boring season of watching has-beens.

Terrible. Now ZERO rookie forwards make the team out of camp.

Obrian was sent down last year so that kids could play when he didnt earn his spot. I have faith Hartley will do the same this year. Also David Jones will be injured for at least 20 games and others will go down as well. So lots of room for derseving players to come up and steal a spot in camp or pst injury

Probably more accurate to say ZERO rookies being handed a spot out of training camp. That's a good thing, no?

Great point. Longer term thinking is necessary to build a team that is competitive for years to come.

From my perspective we can ice a team next year without being forced to push a kid into the line up if he's not 100% ready and has shown that with consistency. Which is perfect.

If a kid shows up to camp and beats out a veteran then you have a good problem to deal with.

That said I can understand from a season ticket holders perspective that paying that type of money justifies the desire to be entertained for the money they are spending. That's fair. But it's not what's best for the club or the kids and if a season ticket holder has a problem with this philosophy they don't have to renew their tickets.

This is going to be one hell of a competitive training camp. I like the competition as long as the best players win the spot, not the veteran or waiver ineligible guys.

Unless they earn it during camp. Which is fine by me. I'd still like to see Jones dumped (mainly because I don't think he adds anything).

i just can't believe there is UFA signing news on Aug 23!

I was sure any UFA signing in Augest would be Kevin Hayes signing with us...lol

I like it.
The Gooch still has a lot of clock left if he can bring his game back up a little bit, and based on the number of players that seemingly had career years under Hartley last season, I don't see it being out of the realm of possibility.

I still wouldn't be surprised if JG wasn't a full-time Flame for a couple seasons, but who knows. I'd say Sven is the most likely to make the team this year, with either a trade coming during training camp (Jones for... nothing?) or a couple of guys splitting time in the press box.

Either way, I think anyone who genuinely earns their spot is going to get to play. I can't see any negative value in this contract.

I see it as a good one year investment and not much else. The Flames have cap space, money, and contract spots; meanwhile, Setoguchi brings one huge question mark with him.

Potential answers-
1. He has a similar season, or worse than last year's season
-This will either end in a 4th-7th round pick, waivers or him sitting as the 13th forward.
2.He has a good season so either
-this might get the Flames something at the deadline(I doubt it will be higher than a 3rd round judging by this year).
-He will play out the season and leave.
-The Flames sign a tested player for a few more seasons.

I am just curious if the Flames still plan on having a distinct top 6 and bottom 6(As was discussed by Burke a while back). If so I am curious which one of our forwards fits where, especially if Setoguchi has a good season.

PS:I have no idea what is the right way to develop a prospect, therefore I can't complain about anything this team does to "take away opportunity" from our prospects.

My guess would be:
Jiri Hudler ($4.000m) / Mikael Backlund ($1.500m) / Devin Setoguchi ($0.750m)
Curtis Glencross ($2.550m) / Matt Stajan ($3.125m) / David Jones ($4.000m)
Mason Raymond ($3.150m) / Sean Monahan ($0.925m) / Joe Colborne ($1.275m)
Brandon Bollig ($1.250m) / Paul Byron ($0.600m) / Brian McGrattan ($0.750m)

Not horrible but not exactly an all star team. If one of the kids can't outplay anyone in that top 12 then they need more time developing. If they do play their way onto the team then guys like Setoguchi can be waived/demoted or sit in the pressbox. Besides someone is bound to get injured, the over/under on Jones is probably about 10 games in.

No downside to this. Good signing.

Why is that? It's not like he got a pay day in the millions assuring himself a spot. This is pretty much league minimum. For that price Devon can sit in the pressbox, claimed off waivers, or sent to the AHL if a youngster beats him out.

Injuries will happen. If they don't happen in Calgary, they'll happen somewhere else and teams will be looking for help.

Last season, the Flames did not have their full healthy line-up available for any of the 82 games in the season. Cammalleri, Galiardi, and Stajan each missed about a quarter of the season. Jones missed almost half the season and Glencross missed more than half the season.

Anyone in panic mode should probably re-assess.. It's basically league min for a guy who will either return to form and provide great value.. Or suck and play in the A. There is next to zero risk as far as term or dollars go.
