Well, as his face resembles Butler and is chained to us for 2 years on that terrible contract, for the 2014-15 season I vote him whipping boy.
The saving grace here is he's likely to sit half the season or more on the IR list anyway, so we'll barely even know whether '$4 million David Moss' is still around.

Having Gaudreau and Hudler and Mason Raymond as the established small skilled guys and Granlund and Rienhart out-performing him by quite a bit leaves him waiting for an injury or a line up that has room for his skill set.
I just don't see a Backlund /Byron transformational increase in his compete level.
It is made more difficult in that Backlund / Stajan and Monahan while not soft are not going to change a game around with their physical play.
His way onto this team is to be more skillful than the small-skilled 3...

Sven has to either be given time and linemates and a legit shot on the Flames this year or he has to be moved. Having him further wallow away into his mid 20's in the AHL is awful asset management. He has a pretty impressive 50 games in the NHL for a guy his age that is comparable to guys like Huberdau and Schiefle, he can't be left in the AHL until he's 24 or he is going to look to get out of here at his first possible chance (and I wouldn't blame him under those circumstances).
As for Granlund and Reinhart "out performing" him, last year. I agree they did in the AHL. In the NHL, where it matters, Sven has easily been the best of the 3. If you are producing in the NHL (where Sven produces at a top 6 winger pace so far) nothing else matters.
If Sven plays well but still can't crack the lineup, I think he should be traded for a defensive prospect or young defenseman. The team has a few skilled small forwards already, something has to give.

Wallow away in his mid 20s? He's 21. There is plenty of time for him to develop still.
If he doesn't have a good camp you send him to the AHL and keep developing him. You don't throw away a kid with his talent because he isn't ready to dominate the NHL as a 21 year old.

This is Sven's third pro season and the last year he can be sent down without going on waivers. He needs to make the team soon or be traded or we could lose him for nothing.

No need to panic about his waiver status yet. I don't think he makes the teams at the start of the season. Hopefully he steps it up in the AHL and earns a call-up during the season.
I do think he has a good chance of being traded, I'm just hoping he has good value when it happens.
The issue with that is that he may feel he's ready before the Flames do then it screws everything up and you lose him for nothing. Sven is a small skilled player, you can have too many of them on the team though. If he develops into a good NHL player but still isn't our best option then you have to trade him, if he becomes a great NHL player then you move someone else to make room for him. Until he does though, he shouldn't be on the team and if it came to keeping him and potentially losing him to waivers or trading him and getting something for him, then you have to trade him.

He will be 22 by the start of the season. If he plays the full year in the AHL again he will be 23 by the start of the next season. He's not 19 anymore, you can't keep playing guys like Byron, Bollig/Westgarth, etc in front of him if you want to keep him motivated and thinking that he is a part of the plans and keep him wanting to be here.
I know I seem to be in the minority here but I think the Flames have somewhat mis-managed his development so far and another year or 2 in the AHL isn't going to help him at all. Not nearly as much as playing with the Flames, who happen to be rebuilding and should be playing the young guys over borderline veterans at this point anyway.
Watch the first 5 minutes of this video and tell that Sven isn't an NHL level offensive talent right now. If he's not getting played here, he should be trying to get a chance elsewhere.

I think it is pretty much common knowledge that it was never his offensive talent that was in question. He was a defensive pylon to be honest...all reports are that he has gotten better and if he is good enough they will make room and he will be on the team.

I still think Sven's first benching was totally unwarranted and it seemingly derailed his season. There was a lot of players that deserved the bench before Sven 10 games in, and not just vets.

Joe Colborne and Sean Monahan are both far worse in the defensive zone than Baertschi.
Calling him a defensive pylon is disingenuous and downright incorrect.
Monahan's lines underlying stats took a horrendous dip the game after Baertschi was press boxed and sent down.

Maybe it was Burke proving a point? Not sure... I think Feaster rushed Sven though.
