Default Peter Maher's first "Ya Baby" call - 1986 Smythe Final; EDIT: Entire 1986 video added

From the Calgary Flames 1986 video yearbook, the "C of Red":

Full version from the video (subsequent commentary is by Larry Day):

EDIT: Entire "C of Red" video found below in post 6.

P.S. The "Ya Baby" spelling is how it was back in '86 (to my knowledge; I have a Lanny McDonald print from 1989 that he also inscribed "Ya Baby".

Still think Peter got the "ya baby" from Tim Hunter. There was a highlight from a Flames goal in that Edmonton series where the camera flashes to the Flames bench and you can clearly hear Hunter holler ya baby. Then later in that series Peter used it for the first time.

I managed to secure this tape off Ebay about 11 or 12 years ago. Great video of that 85-86 season, and the playoffs. Just a minor adjustment; its a young Ron MacLean, still working for local station 2&7 at the time, who did the narration.

The video does show this clip -- I'll upload a copy tonight.

EDIT: See the full video in post #6 below -- fast forward to the 8:30 mark.

Thanks browna -- Larry Day did the 1989 video, so I just assumed he did the 1986 one as well. You're right though -- it does sound like Ron MacLean (mind = blown).

Watched a fair bit of it again, thanks, much easier than firing up the VHS.

The first 28 minutes are required watching for any Flames or non-Calgarian at the time, fan hoping to catch some of the essence of the genesis of the Edmonton rivalry; though it still didn't capture how it really was the Stanley Cup for the Flames, their fans, and the City of Calgary, hanging on every shot on net, every period...and how much, and how easy it was and is to hate the arrogant Oilers and their fans.

Other notes:
-Don Wittman showing why he was maybe the best CBC commentator of all; capturing the big goal and big moments of importance, with proper levels of enthusiasm and knowledge of the moment. The start of the "C of Red" can be attributed to him (12:15-12:41)

- Someone managed to splice in a 2014 crowd shot of the crowd at Northlands (23:54 to 24:01)

-Joe Mullen - So good, so clutch. Again and again (throughout)

-Vernon and the "Music City Miracle" in Game 6 vs St. Louis was abhorrent goaltending to give up the lead and lose the game (42:00 to 43:04)....however, it was completely eclipsed by Greg Millen's goals in Game 3 (34:06-34:30). How that guy can be still be an analyst given the angles and being 25 ft out of the net on some of those goals in playoff hockey is beyond me.

-Risebrough old school all the way, part of no group hugs when he scored or was on the ice...big goal or not, a tap of the shin pads and skate back to center. His time with the late 70's Habs front and center.

Without question. I loved Don Whitman.

I also couldn't help but notice that helmet-less idiot Craig MacTavish. I had forgotten that he was still dumb enough to play without one in the late eighties.

He played without a helmet into the late 90s.
