I posted this in the video game thread but it looks like Microsoft is going be blocking No Man Sky from coming to the Xbone due to their own onerous requirements on indie developers.

Maybe they'll grant an exception but I'd hope it forces them to remove that "release parity" stupidity in the first place. Microsoft did the same to the developer in the past with Joe Danger and they still haven't learned.

Heh, if anything its an awesome value and day one purchase for me. All 4 halo games, 1 and 2 remastered, all the multiplayer maps.

I hope this is wrong. With all the positive buzz around this game it would be a bad move for MS. Considering how they have been adapting so quickly lately it would not surprise me to see them work this out.

so funding of nextgen console has magically appeared....

Both consoles have the same price (no kinect).

Both consoles require an additional $ to buy access to online content (question, does this include access to non-gaming content like using netlflix?).

to be completely honest, i will be using this console exclusively for nhl, and the odd year of getting madden and/or fifa. Down the road might get the camera when the kid is big enough to play some of the motion games.

based on the above, which console would folks suggest?

Depends on who you play online with and which online service they use TBH. If your friends are going one console, you should go with them. If you are just playing by yourself you should get the console that has better horse power and that would be the PS4. Granted for multi plat sports games, the differences will be less noticeable.

thanks.

online purposes - trying out demos, netflix, and some online versus but usually against anyone

if my main purpose are sports games, will the console with the better horse power even matter? I would imagine companies like EA try to re-use as much development across platforms, and don't necessarily do more on a given console even if it does have more computing power.

Honestly, if all you are interested in is the occasional sports game, there is very little separating the two. Whatever you feel has the comfiest controller? As you've speculated, the difference in power between the two really won't be hugely noticeable on multi-platform sports games with short development cycles.

Being a Playstation guy, my recommendation falls with the PS4. Based on what you're saying, you will be subscribing to whatever company's online service. PS Plus really presents a lot of value. Every month there are two new games posted for subscribers to download for free. So far on PS4 they have been mostly indie/downloadable games but as time goes on there will be full retail games added to the service (as there was and still is on the PS3). You can't beat free for trying out new types of games and might even find something you really like!

thanks.

the only reason i'm leaning towards the xbox is that i find that demos for sports games tend to reach xbox faster, and the fact that the EA access seems to be available on xbox alone.

how about when comparing media handling (ie. streaming stuff from my pc/mac to my console for viewing)? I know the ps3 was better than the 360 for this. Also, do either of the consoles support bluray movies?

Still more than happy with my choice of Xbox. I prefer the controller first of all but more to the point it is the console the kids find the easiest to use. They can turn it to whatever channel they want to watch by asking it, they love the Kinnect when it comes to the Dance game (whatever it is called) etc etc etc. It's quite friendly for them to use (and kids never get tired of a computer saying hi to them when they walk into the room). I know we aren't the only family...I know another family that has both consoles but the go to is the xbox.

And honestly, I still don't get the big deal with the games....you will quite honestly not notice that much difference between games if you aren't comparing them directly side by side (which you won't do). Play the game on my xbox and go down the street and see it on the PS4 and it isn't a big deal if you can even tell (which when engrossed in the game while playing you typically can't). A good game is a good game. A bad but pretty game is still not worth playing.

That said...by Christmas I will have both, but I have a feeling the default will always be the Xbox one in our house for the foreseeable future.

if you are satisfied with the xbox why are you also purchasing the ps4? is it strictly for ps4 exclusive games?

Both support Blu-ray movies -- I'm not sure on the media streaming as I don't do this but I've heard the Xbox is better for it at the moment.

EA Access will only be available on Xbox One -- it sounds like it would be good for someone like you. I'm not sure how concerned you are with being totally up to date with brand new releases. If that isn't a big deal to you, EA Access could be a really good service. I could also see the Kinect really appealing to your kids down the road.

PS4 appeals to me more because I feel the Sony owned studios make the best games in the industry, which has always been what matters to me most.

Kind of funny aside here, but I replaced every instance of "PS4", "PlayStation", "PS3", and "PS Plus" with their Xbox ecosystem equivalents and the paragraph was still correct.

Sounds like EA access was made for you. You will get your fix of FIFA, Madden (previous years versions) and more games for $30 a year, plus 10% off the latest NHL which you can try 5 days before release.

As for the media stuff I don't think streaming exists in the same form as the PS3 or Xbox 360, but I believe there's a function to play to the Xbox One from a windows PC (I haven't tried it). Personally I'm pretty happy with the multimedia aspect of the Xbox One, I often switch between TV/Netflix/Youtube/blu ray and games, and having all that stuff instantly accessible from one source is great.

Well I am a pretty big fanboy... I had to find some way to recommend the PS4 beyond "ZOMG UNCHARTED"

Honestly, Xbox One seemed like the better option for him, good choice.

Just an FYI.. I think you can run EA all access without Xbox Live. For $30 you get Battlefield 4, Madden, FIFA, and NBA Live.

Someone who has it might help you get set up with it. It's still in beta right now but gets you some good games.

Good choice as you really couldn't go wrong either way but the XB1 controller really is the best controller to date as flipping back and forth it feels better than the PS4 controller.

Anyone playing The Last of Us on PS4? It's still a great game a year later but if you still have a PS3 don't bother as it looks pretty much the same with the exception of slightly better textures and draw distances. Also the change to 60 fps doesn't really make much of a difference as is isn't a twitch shooter and your character doesn't move very fast even when running. Still enjoying playing through it again.
