they beat a terrible team by one run, maybe lets settle down...still a missed opportunity if you ask me and the players on the team agree

The Jays main competition down the stretch
Baltimore - Got a fantastic pen piece
Yankees - addressed most of their weaknesses, still suck for their standards, but are better.
Detroit - Added one of the best starters in the game.
A's - Added a different one of the best starters in the game.
Angels - didn't add, but are already the 2nd best team in baseball.
Jays added Valencia, a platoon player that can only play against lefties and Scott Sizemore who's AAA depth.
It wouldn't have cost much to get Bartolo Colon off the Mets, or to acquire a decent pen piece. Having a rotation that basically consists of a rookie and Mark Buerhle + 3 junk ballers is not a recipe for success.

take the win for sure but that win doesn't mean anything when it comes to the decision not to acquire any help down the stretch. Beat them 3 out of 4 times and then continue that pace if you want the division

52 games left:
- 9 x Baltimore
- 9 x Tampa
- 7 x Seattle
- 7 x New York
- 6 x Boston
- 3 x Houston
- 3 x Detroit
- 3 x Chicago White Sox
- 3 x Chicago Cubs
- 2 x Milwaukee
If Lind, Lawrie and EE can get back soon, this may get interesting.

That's entirely possible. The other idea floated around on the broadcast last night is that the teams who were selling just weren't interested enough in the Jays prospects and youth to deal with them. Hard to say, only AA and up know for sure.
Either way, it's great the team gutted out a win with this hanging over them for the day. Hopefully they can keep the streak going and string together more as the team gets healthy.

Jays Broadcasters also commented last night that Hutchinson could be shut down in another two months. Basically late September he is going to reach his max innings.
Gregg Zaun on Sportsnet supported what Janssen and Bautista said.
AA in my view is looking for the perfect deal... (which is a problem).

Has there been any study done on the teams that make a lot of deadline transactions and go on to win the WS vs those that dont make a lot? Would be interesting to see how trades actually push a team over...or not.

^Those numbers will always skewed since only one team will win the world series but few teams make trades to upgrade. For baseball, making the playoff can be looked as successful if you made upgrades then compare those numbers.

Your Colon comment I don't think is true/fair. A) The Mets were apparently not willing to trade him; B) if the Mets do decide to trade him, they were rumoured to be looking at doing so after the season (feel they can get much better return if they decide to then); and C) if the Mets did try to trade him it sounded like they were offering a ridiculous price for him (especially for what he is).

Bautista seems to forget that the Blue Jays added a lot of players before last season. The Blue Jays are about 9th in the league for salary, but only 17th in attendance. Maybe if Toronto supported their team more they could afford some better players.

I think I heard during the game last night that the last 3 WS champs have made deadline deals.

While I do agree with you that they Jays do have a high payroll and Bautista should recognize that. However fan support is improving. I am getting my attendance statistics from ESPN which shows the Jays average home attendance has gone up from 25th in 2011, to 23rd in 2012 to 14th in 2013, so there does seem to be a pretty steady improvement in attendance over the last few years.

Of the players they added, one of the Starting Pitchers is gone (no replacement)... Jays have had the same problems all season they have a thin roster which are injury prone....
Only way for the Jays to add attendance is to win.... i.e. adding players to make an impact if they make the playoffs.
However the players (i.e. Janssen as well) should have kept this type of stuff from the media .......but I would bet that most of the players on the team are thinking or saying the same thing.

Adding players like Lester/Price came with too high of a cost. Even with an solid addition the chances of a deep run in the playoffs would still be very low. I wouldn't want the Blue Jays to sacrifice the future for what would most likely be a failed attempt at a World Series.
Knowing the Blue Jays, if they traded for Lester they would find a way to miss the playoffs.

If things were to stay the same in the standings from now until the end of the season, we would be in a one game playoff with the Angels.
Who would we start for that game? Dickey?
