Re Catholics...or any other religion...why would an adherent call themselves Catholics, or Muslims, yet not follow the tenats as set out by those who hold court over it? Seems rather fraudulent doesn't it?
You can't be a doctor or lawyer without adhering to specific requirements...do the religious get a free pass?
You mean God?
Muslim is pretty broad, don't think that example works. The Catholic at least have the Catholic Church and the Pope. But even the Popes have differed in opinion from one another, so it's not exactly clear cut to say what exactly a Catholic should or should not believe.

Except that the Catholic Church never taught that ever. It was well established in the upper-class (educated) world was round, outside of a select few, long before the church was created. The peasants farming didn't really care.

It's like being an American, but not believing in the right to bear arms.
Throughout the history of the church, there have been dissident members - including some clergy.
There is also the cultural aspect which is completely different than the religious one. I work with a non-religious Jewish person who still follows the dietary laws. Similarly, many Catholics these days are non-religious but still put their kids through the rites and milestones of being a Catholic because it has become tradition as part of the culture. As for myself, I am non-religious but it's still ingrained in me to set Sunday aside for family and community time. In some parts of the world, much of it (family/community time) is still organized through church, even if half the people are sleeping during the sermons.

I get so uncomfortable when we talk about Muslims on CP. I know I mentioned this before, but the visual I get is a bunch of middle-aged to older white guys sitting around a barber shop talking about "them".
I agree, the thread started off a little racist'y', which is why I liked the Old-Farts comments so much. It's really not as crazy or bad as it sounds compared to a lot of other religious ideas, including the white ones.
Kinda felt like just another reason to pile on the 'brown folk'. Although, it is hard to understand how one could dislike such a cute Scotty dog! But to each their own.

Yeah, and there's never much push back when you get this kind of stuff happening on CP. It's a little disconcerting, and off putting.
Well, I do understand the other side of it too, it's what we're exposed to. And right now, between Boka Haram, ISIS, (the video in that thread today was really scary and sad ) and other conflicts, there's some bad examples of the Muslim faith out there (and yeah, not the TRUE Muslim faith, but you know what I'm getting at).
It's perhaps not a very forward thinking reaction we get here all the time on this subject, but it's also easy to see how one could get bogged down or misinformed. Doesn't excuse it, but I can see where it comes from and how it's hard to get away from.
Ehhh, it's been a long day, and I've probably already said more than I am qualified to, heh. I'll bow out before I depress myself here. Tough topic to be dealing with right now.
It was a Catholic priest who came up with the Big Bang theory.
Oh that totally makes up for the dark ages and the numerous scientists which were imprisoned, killed and forced to hush about their discoveries and ideas....

Agreed. The racist undertones and the original comments regarding how Malaysians should be more concerned about landing planes made me cringe. I suppose it just helps me to identify posters I'm better off not engaging.
Overall though it's pretty embarrassing.

Undertones? There is blatant racism in this thread. I am pretty sure I saw one poster that essentially said 'Muslims smell worse than dogs'.
It is pretty shocking that this #### is allowed to slide. A thread like this reflects poorly on the entire community of CP.

Since we are talking Catholic church, here's about the best breakdown by anyone by one of the best speakers around, Stephen Fry on why the Catholic church is not a force for good.
what a waste of 4 minutes of my life....worst CP thread ever.
Malaysia is a great country, go visit and don't believe the Telegraph - this is a paper that often dropped these CalgarySun/Daily Mail style articles to rouse the ire of the middle classes
ya, this is silly. Maybe those who visit other cultures need to be respectful of where they are visiting, maybe dogs are apart of their society and culture. So ignorant.

I have a feeling a lot of the nonsense being posted on here is probably being posted by those who have not visited many different places/cultures.

Back in the Middle Ages, the Church used to call people that didn't adhere to ALL the dogma "heretics" and encourage them to recant their heresy with all kinds of unpleasant and violent methods. Nowadays I imagine you'd just call them "hypocrites", for saying one thing (I'm Catholic!) while believing another, while the Church ignores their heresy because kicking all the heretics out would leave the priests preaching to empty buildings.

Don't get me wrong, I understand most followers have a certain level of hypocrisy. It's impossible to be perfect, and part of being human, whether you adhere to a religion or not.
When it bugs me is when you have people that don't realize their own hypocrisy and are using their own religion (even though they aren't technically following it as evidenced by their own hypocrisy) to keep others or other groups down. Like the example I used before. Pastors or politicians who are cheating, or screwing children, or whatever, that are shouting from the roof that 'god' doesn't like homosexuals, or allow that kind of behaviour. That's where the real problems are, and it's always been that way, even in the middle ages. The people in power, keeping their power, and not even subscribing to the dogma they preach.
They would openly punish people, as you put it, for disobeying the dogma, that they themselves would disobey in private. Those are the real hypocrites.
Followers just struggling on their path is just a natural part of being human, and I understand that.

You would just call them dissident Catholics. If someone has gone through certain rites, then they are a Catholic unless the church excommunicates them or they renounce their faith. Daradon is correct too that hypocrisy is a human quality. It doesn't matter if it is religion, politics, business, philosophy, justice... whatever. Everyone has things that they are conflicted with and cannot reconcile. Only the most ardent and stubborn extremists wouldn't.
Contrary to popular belief, the church does accept some level of dissident behavior and is willing to debate it within their circles. You are correct to that they are a lot more apprehensive to drop the hammer these days though as dissidents are becoming more powerful. I think this is part of the reason the new pope was chosen. He himself is considered somewhat dissident on some issues.
I think the attitude is funny though. People complain that Catholics are archaic and need to change and need to align with a more modern world. Then when Catholics do change, they get labeled hypocrites by many of the same people for not just falling in line with the Church. If the Church is ever going to change, it needs to happen among the members first. Any liberalization from the members should be encouraged.
