I may be in the minority but I really like wearing a suit and tie. It makes me feel good, ready for the day, it's like my armour

I'm in the 'I'd rather be a bit overdressed than underdressed' camp... making an effort seems, to me, to be worth it.

The knot you're describing how to tie Sliver is the Four in Hand knot. I can understand why you mess it up the first few times, because it's kind of a slippery knot.

Half windsor is easier to do, once you learn it, results in a sharper looking knot as well.

This thread brought to you buy the makers of previous classics such as "A-Hole Things You Do Just to Be an A-Hole", Can Just anybody buy bull semen?, & Is it racist to not want to hire somebody because they smell like ethnic food?.

Silver makes some great threads.

11 pages of replies? For a clip-on tie search?

Has anyone informed the OP that "half-decent clip-on tie" is oxymoronic?

I dunno...I always kind of found the 8-bit clip-on tie a great way to look like a nerd.

Speaking of fashion faux pas, I've always wondered why a short sleeve button up shirt is always looked down upon whereas a regular dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up or a polo shirt aren't. What are the rules here?

Just a trend in fashion. Currently they're back to being widely accepted, and are a much better option if choosing between that and a polo shirt. The only real "rule" is that if you're wearing a short sleeve dress shirt, don't bother wearing a jacket (as the lack of cuff will look odd). If you need to wear a jacket, then wear a long sleeved shirt to go with it.

Well you just said it I think. Don't wear a short sleeved shirt. Pretty simple.

I think the rolling up is fine because you don't start a function or event or party with them rolled up. They get rolled up as the gathering relaxes (and people get drunk).

Are you referring to only formal events or looking down on button up short sleeve shirts for all occasions?

Is a shirt like this acceptable in a casual office in the summer? (To replace a golf shirt with jeans)

Well anywhere a golf shirt is acceptable I would wear that.

Yeah, I was thinking events more formal than that.

Offices can be different too. It all depends on the job and the culture in that company. But if your putting in long hours in the summer, you wanna be somewhat comfortable.
