When the NHL changes from a shoot out or Overtime to a pull up competition to decide games I will be concerned. Until then it is a none issue.

Guess we need this guy for training camp as our conditioning coach
[Monahan is doing pull-ups. Hartman counts them off]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: One for the GM! One for the Flames! Come on Joker, pull! Pull!
[Monahan can't complete another pull-up]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: I guess the Flames don't get theirs!
[Monaahn moves on. Bennett steps up to the bar]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Get up there, fat boy!
[Bennett tries with all his might, but cannot do a single pull-up]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Come on, Bennett! Pull! Pull! You mean to tell me you can't do one single pull up Bennet? You are a worthless piece of ####, Bennett! Get outta my face!

You asked me to give a basis for why I thought what I did, I gave concrete examples that people would know of and you guys have a meltdown. It's an opinion, if you disagree it shouldn't be such a huge deal that you need to break down and nitpick.
It's a forum, I'm entitled to an opinion and I have over a decade of experience training with high level athletes so if I form an opinion based on logic that should be allowed. You want me to name a 1000 names of people that can do a bunch of chinups? Then would that be good enough? Over an NHL season a player will get softened up and taking the contact that is inevitable could easily injure a players shoulders, it's how the body reacts in contact sports. The chinup thing is just one exercise but he needs to be an overall athlete regardless of chinup count. He only really needs to add 5-10 pounds to play with his style, now please don't freak out because I don't agree with all of you.

... but sometime in that decade you learned that chin-ups and pull-ups aren't the same thing... right? :P

obviously, doesn't really factor in though as they both work similar muscles and are both representative of upper body strength. Again with the nitpicking... yeesh.

You want to talk about nit-picking? How about comparing and judging a teenager against some of the best athletes in the world as grown men?
Your smug over-reaction got the pile on it deserved.

I know it's a bit late... finally got a chance to go through this thread and get caught up. But I'm really stoked for Bennett as he's who I wanted all along. Anyone get the whole Harry Potter "Not Slytherin" vibe from this whole thing... Sam Bennett "Please... Not Oilers..." someone gif that I think that'd be hilarious.
Sam the Tenacious "B"!

Smug over-reaction... that's what an opinion is called nowadays? You expect me to rollover? Everybody loves to nitpick and use shaming rhetoric to insult me but whatever, nobody addressed the issue that he likely has a weak upper body, and I wasn't comparing... examples were asked for and given. I've done nothing to be condescending or rude, but whatever, go on coming up with insults over an opinion. Hell I may even be wrong but can form a thought without freaking out or insulting someone elses.

@AcGold there seems to be near unanimous agreement in various threads here that Bennett needs more strength, no argument. I think people are just sick of the pull up thing as if that's all that matters

Wait, so was this a wide grip "pull up" or like a regular chin up.......or does pull up imply wide grip? This is so very important. Also, if he gains weight, wont that make the pull ups harder for him given he'll now be having to pull up more weight?
This is so confusing and I won't rest until SB puts this to bed at training camp!

"Hmm, difficult. VERY difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There's talent, oh yes. And a thirst to prove yourself. But where to put you?"
Bennett: "Not the Oilers....anything but the Oilers..."
" Not Edmonton, eh? Are you sure? You could be great, you know. It's all here in your head. And you would help the organization on the way to greatness, there's no doubt about that. No? Well if you're sure...better be....Calgary!"

The strength thing for Bennett is so overblown. Is it that suprising that an 18 year old kid is physically immature and will have to get stronger to play in the NHL? 95% of players drafted every year have similar issues. It's almost like they're teenagers or something...

Nitpicking?
Oh well, not my intention. It was just weird as I've never heard a professional trainer use the two interchangeably before. Most of them go on rants if you confuse the two lol. Guess you're slacking!

Does it not raise any red flags that he must have known he was going to have to do pull ups at the combine and still couldn't do any? I mean a couple weeks worth of trying to do a pull up and you'd be able to do one pretty easily.
I'm excited to see Bennett at training camp in the fall, think he'll be a great Flame regardless of pull up ability.

I actually heard that Bennett ran around in circles while laying on the floor Homer Simpson style during the entire interview with Edmonton. McTavish kept asking questions and Bennett kept screaming 'whoop! whoop! whoop!' This went on for a full 20 minutes until Bennett finally vacated his bowels.
However, much to Bennett's dismay this actually increased his stock with the oilers. They now felt he could really be a leader for their young superstars.
The pull up thing was really a last ditch effort.

You came in about one month late. This topic was already beaten to death shortly after the combine.
