(CNN) -- A Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday.
Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with MH17, and the flight's last known position was over Ukrainian airspace, the airline said on Twitter.

Not good - 290 people on board.

Putin should have put his dogs on a leash. I'm willing to bet his pro-russian militias figured it was another Ukrainian military transport. Also pretty stupid to allow airlines to fly over a hotspot where planes have been shot down recently.

I hate to jump to conclusions, but it wouldn't be the first time that Russia shot down a civilian airliner.

Obviously not a great outcome regardless, but Russia or the pro-Russia militia shooting it down is terrible.

An aviation source in Moscow told Reuters the plane had been found burning on the ground in east Ukraine.

A number of military planes have been shot down by missiles in recent weeks over eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatist rebels have been fighting government forces.

The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports of the crash and was "urgently working to establish what has happened".
