I was never a big fan of his, but it's hard to believe that a two-way deal barely above league-minimum was the best offer he received.
I say he'll be an Oiler before the end of October, either as a waiver claim or a minor trade.

400k in the AHL? That has to be some sort of record for a two way (non burried contract).

That's only on cap hits over ~$900,000 (and only on the portion over the exempt amount).

He won't be playing in the AHL. I'd bet he had other 1 way offers
He wants to play for the Blues. If he can't earn a spot there he'll go on waivers where he'll 100% be claimed, and that guarantees him a spot in the NHL for the rest of the season
Whoever he ends up playing for this season, he'll be a solid bottom pairing guy

Probably the best offer he could get from a serious top-six contender. St. Louis is quite deep on the blueline, and it's not unreasonable to think that Bouwmeester vouched for his skills as a depth defenseman.

Kyle Cumiskey also makes $400,000 in the AHL, and there is a bunch of guys between $300,000 and $400,000. Certainly not the norm, that's just the price for veterans who are borderline NHLers and also great in the room.

Yeah, a brain fart. I was thinking it was the first $900,000 that counted but that would be stupid.

Wow, I wasn't a fan of his but I still wasn't expecting this type of crappy contract for him.

I crapped on him when he was a flame but as a player looking for an NHL job I wish him the best.
I hope he sticks with the blues just to see Gaudreau turn him inside out.

Pretty good deal potentially for Butler.
His home-town team, his low cap hit makes him much more desirable than he otherwise would be, and he's got a legitimate shot at serious playoff hockey.
He'll probably look better with whoever he's paired with in St. Louis than he would he looked last year. Could make him more valuable on his next contract.

Except there are 6, maybe 7 depending on how people feel about Leopold and his health, better defensemen on the team. It is unlikely he is paired with anyone in St. Louis and only sees play-off time from the PB/stands.
I guess it is a good deal in that he wasn't likely offered much by anyone and allows him and his wife to live in the city they want for the start of the NHL season but hard to see how this is a good deal for his NHL career going forward.

So he signed there because he wants to live there, not necessarily because he wants to play there. That always turns out so well...

Never fully understood the hate (yeah he had a ton of flubs, but he was being grossly misused by our coaching staff). Can't pin it on a lack of effort.
Good for him taking a low contract to stay home, and still manage to pull in 8x my wage.

Disagree. He's a fringe NHLer who got a fringe NHLer contract, pretty simple to me.

This reminds me of when Wes Walz left the Flames for the Wings and got some great experience in Adirondack.

Wow. Must have been pretty specific about being in STL. Have to imagine he would have gotten a better offer than that.

Not me, at least not to the point that it would be noticeable. He's a fringe NHL player who doesn't really fill a need - at least someone like Engelland will bring toughness. He' going to be 28, might still put it together but he can no longer get paid on potential and is being paid accordingly to what he brings to an NHL team.
And with the two-way contract he has to be aware that St. Louis is not exactly expressing faith that he will even stick around in St. Louis. If he hits waivers and other teams were lining up to get him, he'll end up in one of those places anyways.

Butler may be a fantastic guy, a great teammate etc. The only time I have seen him play like he was elite was the last game of this past season. Our D for that game? Billins Cundari Breen , he looked like an NHL defenseman in comparison to them. We looked so bad that night.
Butler was a give away machine, even if he got it out of the zone he would pass it right to the opposing team. As for his blocked shots? Stop giving the other team the puck! Want to talk about a shot blocker? Give me Bouma, was never a fan of his till this past year. Not the most skilled guy but effort was their always and he wasn't a giveaway machine.
I wish Butler well. Signed so he could be close to home, cant blame him for that. Yet really? Think he is gonna be in the AHL for a good chunk of the season. I don't hate the guy, just hate the player!
Only one other Calgary Flame was as bad at passing the puck, and that is Cammaleri. Yet at least he could shoot the puck lol!

Good for Butler to take his FA opportunity and play at home. His wife gets to work at her vocation, which is an added bonus.
Butler is just a depth defencemen, no more, no less. Flames will not miss him, Blues will be happy to have him when they have a run on injuries. Simple is that. Hopefully he does well there. Good guy from all reports.
