still think we'd be in the pole position to sign this guy. Still a month though ...

Not being biased, but I think I'd rather play with my college buddies rather than my brother for the first few years.

Three college buddies in their early 20s on the same team could be risky though.

If the flames were to sign him, would the 2nd round pick that they give the hawks have to be in 2015 or do the flames get to pick what year?

Neither. It's a 2015 and it would be an added pick in the round not taken away from any team.

the Flames wouldn't give up anything if they signed him as UFA. The Hawks would get the 2nd rounder (# 54 in 2015) as compensation from the league for not signing a 1st rounder. The 2nd round would then just consist of 31 picks instead of 30.

They'll be a bit older by the time they all crack the NHL lineup. Those boys don't really strike me as party animals.

I think he would sign in August, but the only risk is that Chicago might trade his rights for a pick. If a team trades for Hayes' rights then it's much more likely for him to sign with that team.

I would love for the Flames to acquire his rights, just to be sure.

If he wants to play in NHL as soon as possible plus join a shallow prospect pool then Oilers would be a logical choice for Hayes.

That's true for both teams but they don't have Gaudreau or Arnold, two of his good friends

Yeah having those two is a big incentive. Looks to me like it will come down to Flames, Panthers due to emotional ties and Oil for practical reasons.

Well in that case what's the downside? We should be going after him right now!

Or the Bruins, according to the article. Not as much immediate opportunity but he's from Mass.

We can't do anything until August 15th when he becomes a UFA.

He's not a free agent right now.

To much off ice antics is what he's suggesting, though if it would be a problem it would be anyways with someone else

I wouldn't necessarily use the word "antics", but I know many young professionals benefit from surrounding themselves with new people. It's more about avoiding forming cliques which happens sometimes. It might not even be an issue with these particular individuals, but I do think it is something that needs to be considered. I'm sure Treliving and Burke would have a read on whether is would be a problem though.

There's no way this guy signs anywhere other than wherever Gaudreau is playing.

Kevin Hayes ‏@KevinPHayes12 22m I think the play of the year should go to @johngaudreau03 vs @stjohns28 in playoffs. #dangy #johnnyhockey #endtoend

Anyone care to speculate where Hayes would theoretically fit on our depth chart?
2nd prospect on RW, or ~9th overall?
