BleacherReport: Flames 4th in prospect depth now
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...2014-nhl-draft
14. Edmonton
5. Montreal
4. Calgary
3. NYI
2. Tampa
1. Anaheim
Flames page specifically: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...-draft/page/28
Means very little... But still a fun thing to see at least.
We've added 4 potential top line prospects in the last calendar year, saw the emergence of Colborne, and the development of Granlund and Ortio. Not to mention Baertschi knocking on the door.
Exciting times!

As greedy as it is, we still need one more elite forward and then one elite D-man imo, but yeah, looking a lot better.

Anaheim is a talent-rich team. It was able to acquire Ryan Kesler from Vancouver while barely touching the prospect pool.
lol

The Flames have 3 outstanding prospects
I would assume they are referring to Bennett, Gaudreau and Baertschi (but you never know)

It is if you're team is 'in a full rebuild' as some Nuck fans have recently claimed

How long before Ferraro or Dreger throw out another classic "the cupboard is bare" remark at us again?

I infer this is an indication that Vancouver got little in return for Kessler.

I think he meant the "lol" in reference to the fact that the Canucks didn't get much for Kesler.
However, the McCann kid they got at #24 looks decent.

Bleacher report isn't the greatest source of sports knowledge but they probably aren't far off ranking the Flames highly. Not sure if there are many if any teams in the league with better forward depth in their prospect base.

Your return on asset dwindles significantly when the list of potential trade partners is essentially one.
As Flames fans we know this all too well.

It really hedges on how good of a player McCann turns into. If he doesn't turn out it's extremely poor value for a team's best overall player. Even if there were only a few places Kesler would waive to go to he still had two years on his contract and the team could have been more patient and forced his hand as this isn't the same as the Iginla deal where the Flames had to unload him prior to the deadline or risk getting nothing for their franchise player who was scheduled to become UFA.

I don't believe ranking a team's prospect base is relevant or meaningful... It'd be better to ranking a team's pool of players under a certain age...
...to me, it's not meaningful to neglect players like Monahan, Jones and Mackinnon though they're no longer considered prospects.

Agreed - the point of it is to assess the future, so consider all players under 25 (or 23 or whatever works for you)
Why not count a 19 year old, simply because he has already made the show? To me, that makes him an excellent prospect!

At this point, McCann looks very comparable to Klimchuk, IMO. Time will tell of course, but I agree, he is a key factor in the trade.

Kesler wasn't going to report for camp, and only gave the team 2 destinations

Buffalo at 6? I think they are much higher than that. Montreal is a joke to have ahead of them.
