The only reason it makes sense is the Flames wanted another year to look at him before giving him a contract, if he returns to the WHL as an overage player they get time to evaluate him more.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense either It's the 7th round so I won't lose sleep over it but a bit puzzling.

Unless Tom Webster has wanted him for two years and they gave him a going away pick.

It's a honour and a thrill to be drafted. Along with the extra year, maybe they wanted to give him that.

I thought Austin Carroll should have been drafted last year. I really like his game. Team guy, very tough, knack for goal scoring.

Could do worse with a 7th rounder.

I've watched Carroll play quite a bit. He brings it! And he's got the size to back it up. Solid on both ends of the ice, relatively quick foot speed but nothing flashy. Solid pickup. I bet Kanzig likes this pickup. Dave Lowry doing some good work here in Vic.

It's not often you see a guy get drafted who was born in Calgary but raised in Phoenix.

Listening to Button on the radio, he said that one of the reasons they drafted him instead of waiting to sign him as a free agent was because last year they had a player in a similar situation (invited to prospects camp the year before and draft eligible) who they let pass through the Draft and he ended up going elsewhere. They didn't want to risk having that happen again.

He was the first person who came to mind, but he was too old to be drafted when he attended the Flames camp.

It could be Wade Murphy, who attended the Flames camp in 2012 and was drafted in the 7th round by Nashville last year (two picks before the Flames picked Rafikov).

It could also be John McGuire, who attended the 2012 camp, went undrafted in 2013, and signed an AHL deal with Rochester last September.

Thumbs up

Well, the kid is excited to be a Flame: http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=724474

Quote:
“I’m ecstatic. It’s my hometown – I was born there – so I’m really excited to come back there,” Carroll said. “It’s a good organization to be with and I’m super excited.”

“My grandparents have season tickets there so whenever I’m in town or when I lived there they used to take me a good amount. I grew up a huge Flames fan – Jarome Iginla was always my favourite player – it’s pretty surreal being 20 and getting drafted by them.”

Yet several people gave this a mark of 0/10... not 5, not 2, but zero. For a final round pick.

Button says they've been following him for 3 years. They did not want to risk it by letting him go undrafted. They did not discover him while watching Kanzig, they were onto him before that. Going to the AHL next year.

It's always the same people, the anti fighting crowd, the ones who should be on that other board where they over value skill ver everything else. They don't realize that a team is made up of more than just skill, you need to complement it with size and toughness so the skill can do what they want.

Flames stocked up on skill in recent drafts and now need to supplement it with size and toughness and that's what this draft is all about.

Reading these threads and getting a bit of extra info makes me understand the picks a bit better. Hopefully he has a solid season in the A.
