He might be a late riser, but I'm always a fan of players who's stock rises as the season goes on. I like the pick, hopefully he can step it up.
Definitely a project (an older one at that), but a lot to like. Seems like most people had him pegged to come here given that size but he's going to need to take a couple more big steps in the next couple years to be anything more than just a big body on an NHL roster.

Exactly. Both Smith and McDonald seem exactly like this. There's a lot of praise going around the pundit circle for these two draft choices.

Lucic was taken at #50 overall in 2006 too....four spots away from Smith at 54. Perhaps we're onto something.

And Lucic only had 19 points in 62 games that year. I wonder what Bruins fans thought at the time.

Lucic was a similar type of story too that the offense didn't start to come until later in his junior career after he was drafted.
They say he has, size, vision and hands. That is what you want. Skating is going to be awkward for any 18 year old who is 6'6".

No....not yet.
He lost a LOT of development time because of injury and not being ready for major junior early on...but give him some time.
If, and its a big if, he catches up to his potential...he will be one of the best value picks this club has seen in years and i include Gaudreau in that list as well.

Dang, Hunter Smith is 6'7"??? I guess he is tallest Flame right now. I can just see him on the ice with D Keenan Kanzig, G Mason MacDonald or even G Jon Gilles... wow that's a big lineup.

Listening to the interview, Hunter Smith is a very likeable guy. I wasn't too thrilled with the pick, but it does sound like he has a good head on his shoulders.
-Talked about the humiliation of sitting all the way through a draft without hearing his name called and asking himself why nobody would take him.
-He changed his life and training completely, mentioned that he has a personal curfew of 10:00 PM
-Believes he is realistic about his game and very aware that skating is going to be a make or break attribute to get to the NHL
-Mentioned that core strength is so important and referred to his enjoyment of yoga
-Explained that this year the game seemed to slow down for him and he found it much easier to make plays
-Good sense of humour
-Also mentioned an anecdote about Sam Bennett where he wasn't ready to play and Bennett ran him over after a faceoff, causing him to realize that Bennett is a true competitor on top of his skill

Being a Smith myself, I've always wanted there to be a great Smith on the Flames or Sabres and I'd grab a jersey of them.
Derek Smith doesn't count.

Drafting and acquiring character players... I love the idea of 6'0" Bennett headhunting a monster like 6'7" Smith. The Mountain and the Viper.
