Flames Round By Round Draft History Part I
today it's rounds 7 through 12
We all know the Flames draft history is spotty, and with that we just see numbers compared to other franchises and not much in detail.
But how has the club done in each of the 12 rounds in NHL history? Who would be a top three for each round?
http://www.calgarypuck.com/2014/06/f...-12-through-7/
Some good debate, especially tomorrow when we roll out the top 6 rounds.

interesting reading
would be nice to see comparisons to other clubs by round - for example, in round 9, the Flames were x/y while the league average was y/z or something like that

I was going to say Cliff Fletcher and the gang made some good picks in the later round. Names stuck in my mind are Theo Fleury(8th), Hakan Loob(9th), Gary Suter(9th), Sergei Makarov(12th) are great picks. Jiri Hrdina(8th) and German Titov(10th) was not too shabby. I am sure Makarov and Hrdina would have gone a lot earlier if the Russians and Czech players are free to play in the NHL.
As for the other teams, Steve Larmer(Chicago), Luc Robitaille(LA) might be right up there as one the best late round picks in NHL history.

For some reason I always felt that Torgayev would pan out.
Had that one wrong.

Some good news for that Calgary 2nd round pick on Saturday?
The 31-40 pick range has had a stronger result average than 21-30 historically, and is just back of 1-10.
An average of 251 games played for all picks in that range. 81-90 is another grouping that has had a lot of success.

"Uncle to former NHLer Ryan of the Wild." Either thats a misprint or I had no idea Ryan retired @ 29 years old.

He was a nice guy; I played on a line with his son in minor hockey for a few years.

Fun write up. Loob, Suter, Fleury.
Three guys who at some point will get Hall of Fame consideration. Hell of a job in the 80s of late round drafting.

I liked Titov too. I'll always remember the highlight reel hits he took but he always seemed to get back up and never miss a shift. Tough guy that way.

If the Flames draft Sam Reinhart by chance in the first round, it will be just short of exactly 35 years after they drafted Paul Reinhart in the first round.
That 1979 draft was the last draft for Atlanta and incidentally this year will be the first year since in which the Flaming 'A' logo returns to be the main logo for a team associated with the franchise.
