Personally I don't think Roy deserved coach of the year, yes he improved the teams points and position but that was always going to happen after they tanked so badly last year. They held onto the previous coach (sorry i forget his name) knowing full well that the team had tuned him out, were playing way worse than they should have done with the talent they had, just to get a shot at Mckinnon, which worked out beautifully for them. That team was always going to improve this year, even if they got Eakins to coach them (okay that maybe stretching it a little).

the wife asked a good question as we were watching this...

How much coke did it take for cuba gooding jr to get that fired up?!

it was sort of an akward night, with players/folks on the stage not knowing that they need to say a few words, where to stand, etc....

do all leagues have this type of gala/award night? I sorta think it's a waste of time....

He improved them from a lottery team to division champions though. It's not like he barely squeaked into the playoffs. That's an impressive turnaround for a first year head coach.

Also, I know it's still early, but is Duncan Keith building a strong case for a Hall of Fame induction? Two Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals, two Norris trophies, good offensive numbers.. I think if he can stay healthy it's almost a lock.

The NFL started to do a similar awards show in 2012 and did their 3rd annual version this year. They do it on the night before the Superbowl. Alec Baldwin has been the host of all three shows.

I don't think the NBA does a show and I don't follow baseball.

Selke almost always goes to a player in the East.

I think Bergeron was a lock to win the Selke this year, as good as Kopitar was. Bergeron is the best two way forward in the game right now. Kopitar will win it eventually though.

7-3 in the last decade for the west. Brind'Amour and Bergeron are the only east players to win it in that time frame, both with 2 wins now.

Lehtinen, Draper, Daysyuk(3), Kesler and Toews in the west

BUT they should have not been a lottery team in the first place, they were a way better team than that, they were only a lottery team because the management allowed them to sink like a stone with Sacco (thank you) in charge.

So he came in and took charge of a team that was already way better than a lottery team, so he started ahead of the game in the first place.

Gio should have been higher than 10th, but it is hard to argue with the top six, and he was hampered both by being the relative unknown, and because he played on a bad team. Hopefully he maintains his play next year and moves up.

Monahan finishing as far back from that top group in the Calder as he did is fairly ridiculous, however. He should have gotten significantly more votes than he did.

Four of those "west" winners were in the Eastern time zone, and two more in the central.

Geographically speaking, I would say it is 7-3 for the East in the last decade.

Majority of the cities are out East, what are they supposed to do about that? 7 of the last 10 winners were from Western Conference teams. It doesn't matter where they are geographically.

Actually, that is the only thing that matters when we are discussing the issue (or perception) of east coast bias.

16 teams in the Eastern time zone, 14 in Central-Mountain-Pacific. Hardly a huge split.

At any rate, this season overall is actually a hard one to make an east coast bias argument on. The only egregious "error" on the part of the voters in my view is Roy for Jack Adams. That was the media buying into a hype pick at the expense of two coaches that did more with less.

It's an Eastern award (out of all proportion with geographic distribution of teams). Only won once by a player in the mountain or pacific time zone. Almost always to a team east of the Mississippi. Dallas and STL are fairly central actually.
