Default Vagabond's target War Memorial

Quote:
This time, he was not alone. Nearly 20 businesses in the neighbourhood were tagged over the weekend, leaving some owners with a costly cleanup job.

The war memorial at Poppy Plaza was also targeted, but had been cleaned by Tuesday.

Kirk painted a mural on the side of his business, Blank Page Studio, last September. It was first hit with some minor tagging about a month and a half ago, and had proved popular with local vandals since.
“The whole mural itself got kind of obliterated about three weeks ago,” Kirk said.
Hopefully they catch these little buggers and make them clean up the entire neighborhood.

The community needed to have a conversation about how public artists and graffiti artists could coexist, he said.
I'm absolutely perplexed by this comment. His work gets destroyed three times by vandals and now he's talking about 'co-existing' with them. He's talking like that vandal graffiti is somehow legitimate in some community capacity.

It depends, there are some graffiti artists that are doing you a favour by working on your wall. Not likely many of those are in Calgary, and it isn't the case here, but blanket statements and all that.

So time for the obvious question: how about some security cameras?

How can you possibly prevent tagging? It's been going on for years and will continue to unless you've got some sort of barbwire/electric fence/poison gas cloud barrier between the vandal and the wall.

I noticed MEC painted over the grafitti on the backside of their building. Rest assured that will be covered in graffitti again in less than a week.

He should hang out over night with night vision goggles. When they show up, hold them down and spray paint their faces red.

Either bring back hard labor sentences for taggers that are caught. Make them work a road crew running a rake for 2 weeks. Or hugely punative fines, and if they're under aged make it applicable to their parents. Or bring back corporal punishment. I good noon hour whipping 15 lashes, here's your mouthpiece Rico bite down on it, it helps I know.

The world at large does recognize graffiti as an actual and important art form. Check out Banksy and the film 'Exit through the Gift Shop'. It can be absolutely amazing if done well.

Two things though... Firstly, a street artist respects the art of others. Absolutely. Even taggers generally follow this basic rule. For someone to tag over a mural is vandalism. Period. And generally deplorable to everyone except the tagger. Secondly, Calgary has the worst taggers and graffiti artists in the world. It looks like the scribbling of a 3 year old. Even hardcore gangbangers in L.A. and N.Y. have enough skill that you can sort of make out a word, or a picture of some sort. And they a least have a reason for doing it. There is no West Hillhurst Mafioso, as far as I can tell, and they are not at war with the Bridgeland Fighting Walruses.

that's nice and everything, but nobody asks them to tag or paint their property, and leave them with the bill for cleaning, so I don't really consider them artists, I consider them vandals.

If they can afford the paint, they can buy the canvas and paint it and hang it. But don't tell me that its ok for them to spray someones house or fence or piece of public whatever and its ok because they're artists.

Well said sir. One of the best examples of graffiti art in the city is the backside of ernie star arena (if the mural is still there, it was painted when I was young)

If you don't own the property or have the permission, it's vandalism. Period. I don't care if you're Banksy or someone with too much spare time.

The problem is that every little twat out there thinks his is doing this

When in reality 99% of them are doing this

There is great graffiti out there, but scribbling your name on the wall is not one of them. Learn how to paint or screw off.

Why does all graffitti have to look like the spray can was attached to a looping spirograph? I don't understand why taggers and gangbangers can't use Helvetica or at least Calibri. Even Times New Roman would be good.
