Spector: Flames are willing to move Hudler and Wideman
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/u...rthy-addition/
Quote:
Speaking of Calgary, word is the new management team doesn’t exactly share the opinion of the old management team on certain players. Word is the Flames may be willing to sell high on Jiri Hudler, who gave them 54 points last season in Year 2 of his four-year, $16-million deal. Dennis Wideman can certainly be had, but that’s a Flames pipe dream with three years remaining and a cap hit of $5.25.
There are likely only two true untouchables in Calgary: Mark Giordano and Sean Monahan. The rest of the roster would be considered to refuel the rebuild.

I"m happy with this. Hudler's a good deal and Widemen well if he can be moved great if not whatever.

I'd rather keep Hudler unless we get a great offer. Can play either wing and he drives the offense, or at least it seemed that way.

I like Hudler, he was our best forward for stretches.

I think Hudler is the right kind of veteran for this team to carry, however he probably has good trade value after a good season and pretty decent caphit.

This rumour is dumb. Every player should be available, duh. Even Moneyhands.
What does advertising this serve?
Who replaces Hudlers 54 pts on this team ?
And a full season of Wideman is what, 25-30 pts?
Are Flames going in full tank mode for McDavid?
If so, all of last year's good will be gone by December.
I sure hope this is just Spector making stuff up.

Can Hudler fetch a first rounder?
Would Ducks give us their first rounder for Jiri since they also have the Sens' first?

Eat 25% of Wideman's contract, and his cap hit to the new team becomes $3,937,500.
That's an OK cap hit for him, as a 2nd pairing PP QB with sheltered 5 on 5 minutes.
Flames would then hang onto $1,312,500 for the remaining three years. Not sure if they're willing to do that.

I am willing to give the guy a full season before I flush him down the toilet. He averages 0.4 pts+ per game.
I'm not on this stupid devalue an asset bandwagon.

Duh?
Seems pretty obvious to me. Wideman is mediocre but may hold some value. Hudler's value must be near peak and as a small, skilled winger he is easily replaced by our prospects within a year or two. Not a bad idea to sell high.
These are two of the most obvious guys to move.

Detroit could use Wideman, they'd pay a 2nd for him retained

Sell high on Hudler and get bigger. Makes sense.

IIRC, I've seen you say that more than once on here. How do you know that?

“Look at the Boston model,” Linden said. “Thornton, a fourth-line guy, but such an important guy on that team. That’s what makes teams.”
Well, on Monday Bruins GM Pete Chiarelli announced that Thornton, who turns 37 in July, would not be coming back.

The canucks think he's a good asset to our team? WTF? Let's get him the hell out of here as soon as possible. We don't need that stink on us.

I'm very optimistic about our prospects especially Johnny and Sven, but thinking they can easily replace Hudler when they've accomplished almost nothing at an NHL level is crazy. Hudler is a bona fide top 6 NHLer and none of our prospects outside of Monahan have shown that they are bona fide NHLers yet. Pump the brakes a little.

As much as I love Hudler, if a team wants to overpay for him, then I am alright with trading him. It'd be a tough pill to swallow, but I'd get over it.
As for Wideman, if he's paired up with a defensive-minded player, he'll do fine. A .5 PPG defenseman with retained salary should look good for a couple of teams, especially since he has a right handed shot.

We know Sabres been the leaders in that department for a while now.
We also know it will take a monumental effort to get to the Sabres level.
