Shorter term limits encourage more deliberate corruption, instead of the long con engaged in by most politicians.

The key is having the federal government fund election campaigns with an appeal for funding based on assembling enough signatures.

This, like American election regulations, isn't even a problem that needs fixing. It's the obvious solution that doesn't stand a chance because of the existing corruption.

Even with any solution it would take years to weed out the corruption. Such a huge problem doesn't get fixed overnight.

It took years to create and it would take years to fix.

I think the real article paints a good picture of what happened. Politically Obama and Nebraska had to fight. Harper choose to apply pressure by attacking democrats in key oil states. That didn't work because the pressure being applied by the environmental lobby was more effective making it politically dangerous to approve.

Would not applying pressure have made it easier for democrats to win this November election and need less money therefore making the environmental donors less critical? Maybe but I think Harpers strategy was reasonable at the time.

The key strategy though is an east or west coast alternative through Canada to reduce reliance in the US. The interesting thing I find is that Shell and Imperial who have spent billions upgrading refineries haven't written the right chequers to get this passed.

I think Harper is just creating a situation that justifies expanding the clientele for our oil and gas. If keystone happened to get approved that would be gravy. It hasn't been yet and this gives Harper a bit of a hammer to push northern gateway and show that we need to sell our resources to other countries if the US doesn't wanna play ball.

This, we are way too dependent on the United States' economy, and need to widen our market place.

when America's economy gets the flu, Canada gets the drizzling poops.

Plus with Obama likely to be followed by Clinton, I doubt things are going to improve as a market for Canadian energy.

I'm sure this current situation in Iraq will get the pipeline approved. More secure and reliable source, plus it's bad enough to buy oil from Saudi Arabia, much less the ISIS.

TCPL may be starting to look beyond KXL.

The company I work for does other work for them and we have been asked to look at using some existing unused equipment for phase two of an existing project.

Specs are eerily similar to the equipment did FAT for a few years back in the US.

TransCanada hasn't given up on KXL. They have $35 billion of projects in queue with KXL and Energy East (West - East line to NB) being only two of them.

Fair enough.

My point was that there is new equipment that has been mothballed for almost 3 years now that should / will be allocated to other projects.
