It could have been worse. A lot worse. And Spain had....a fluffed opportunity by Torres?
 |
Silva missed a sitter for 2-0 that was huge.

Robben was on a mission in that game. The whole Dutch side took them to town

Spain need to regroup in a big way. The most concerning thing for them is that they lost this game in the middle of the pitch, the space that is usually their strength.
Xavi and Iniesta were invisible and the Dutch midfield just outworked them all over the pitch. Busquets and Alonso did not own the midfield like they have in the past.

Pique and Ramos struggled at the back with the pace of Robben, and RVP.

I wouldnt worry too much about Spain. They are very experienced and fully capable of bouncing back. It won't be easy, but I still expect them to play a big role in this WC.

I was thinking about this the other day. I'm a tall centre back that goes up for all offensive corners and I'm usually targeted by the other team (put their biggest guy on me). I get absolutely manhandled, and I'm not sure if a PK has ever been awarded for me. To some extent, I understand it's tough to give a PK if I am not for sure going to receive the corner, but where is the line drawn? IMO, there should be a free kick awarded outside the box or something if it's not a clear scoring chance. Otherwise, you can basically get away with murder in your own box.

A couple more bounces for the Dutch, and we could've seen two hat-tricks today.

Biggest loss ever by the ruling champion? I would guess so. Some records must have been broken.
Routs weren't that uncommon in the nineties, 1998 especially had many when the games first expanded into 32 teams. But the losers were countries like Saudi Arabia and Jaimaca then.

There are indirect free kicks given inside the box sometimes for lesser fouls but it's quite rare. Other than penalties, referee usually favour defenders in the box.

If they manage to destroy Australia tonight, all they need is a tie from Spain and off to the playoffs they go. (Assuming they don't get destroyed by Netherlands too.)

This thread is going to be huge. I thought north americans weren't supposed to care about soccer. Maybe we should have a World Cup subforum with seperate threads for each game or day.

That pretty much never happens, especially not on corners. In fact I've never seen a indirect kick given as the result of a foul committed on a corner.
