That's not a penalty if you don't touch the other player.

You can't slide under a player when you don't get any of the ball.

In other news ..... Beckenbauer banned from FIFA for 90 days!
Quote:
Franz Beckenbauer has been provisionally banned from taking part in any football-related activity at any level for 90 days after failing to cooperate with an investigation into Qatar's 2022 World Cup bid, FIFA has announced.
It was unclear whether the FIFA suspension would prevent Beckenbauer -- who won the World Cup as both a player and coach -- from attending the tournament in Brazil. He is the first person to be punished as a result of the investigation into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid contests.
Reports alleged that Beckenbauer was reluctant to speak to FIFA's chief ethics investigator Michael Garcia about his part in the hosting votes in 2010. At the time, he was a member of the 22-strong FIFA executive committee.
Frankfurter Allgemeine reported that he had not yet disclosed whether he voted for Qatar, while Die Welt said Garcia had contacted him twice and alleged he had declined to cooperate with the investigation.
Earlier this month, a Sunday Times report on possible corruption during the bidding process for 2022 mentioned Beckenbauer's name in connection with the controversy for the first time. The paper said he had been in Qatar on business duties both ahead of and after the vote.
According to a recent report in Der Spiegel, he was instructed to vote for Australia as 2022 hosts as part of an agreement between the DFB and Australia after the Australians dropped out of the race for the 2011 Women's World Cup, which was then awarded to Germany.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter also claimed he voted for Australia -- but the nation received only one vote and was eliminated in the first round. "One of them must have lied," Der Spiegel claimed.
But despite Beckenbauer claiming that he had nothing to hide, FIFA announced on Friday that the former Germany international had been hit with a provisional ban.
An official statement read: "Franz Beckenbauer has been provisionally banned from taking part in any football-related activity, at any level, for 90 days. The deputy chairman of the FIFA Ethics Committee's adjudicatory chamber, Alan Sullivan, issued the ban at the request of the chairman of the investigatory chamber, Michael J. Garcia. The ban is effective immediately.

He touched him. You cant leave your feet like that. That's MLS level defending.
Even if you dont touch him. You impeded his path.

That one is iffy and still a huge flop but at least more leeway to the ref on that one.
Live it looked like he caught the trailing leg, on the high def replays you catch it but hard to see live.

These refs are brutal.
Bascially, if you get touched in the penalty box and go down, you're guaranteed a pk?

Didnt look like any contact, Costa slipped. I'll reserve judgement for a replay, but thats terrible. Along with the yellow to de Guzman.
The fix is in.

Let me reiterate the current FIFA referee instructions:
Quote:
Referees are reminded to make an early intervention and to deal firmly with holding offences especially inside the penalty area at corner kicks and free
kicks.
To deal with these situations:
• the referee must warn any player holding an opponent before the ball is in
play
• caution the player if the holding continues before the ball is in play
• award a direct free kick or penalty kick and caution the player if it happens once the ball is in play
|
We already saw this in Croatia-Brazil.
Holding is under a tight watch now, they're trying to seriously cut down on it.

Then call Costa for stepping on his leg. That's more of a foul. You are allowed to slide and force the attacker to move.

I don't watch much soccer outside of the major tournaments so this is an honest question, is it a penalty if the offensive players steps on the defender and goes down? I didn't think that PK call was legit but I admittedly know very little.

Not even close. That call gets made 10/10. No reason to go to ground there and just terrible form.

Wait, that wasn't a penalty? I thought it was pretty clear, if the defender impedes an attackers movements in the box without touching the ball, it's a penalty.
