Rumours are floating out of SF that Kaepernick has been signed through 2020. No details yet.

Yup, the details are filtering out - negotiations ran all day yesterday.

Wow that is an utterly terrible contract for the 49ers, why would they agree to it? Absolutely worse than Joe Flacco, and not even particularly close. Kaepernick is a great running back to be sure, but QB? Not even top 15. Until he learns how to read defenses and not take off running when his first read isn't there, this contract will be an albatross. Good thing that D is elite and can carry any QB so it's not a deathblow, but wow is that bad.

Also, does this set the bar at 6 years $140 million for Russell Wilson? Better QB? Check. Super Bowl champ? Check. He's gotta be thrilled by that deal.

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick. Not a fan of that deal at all. Good QB but really?

Setting the bar pretty high for these guys: Cam Newton, Andy Dalton and Alex Smith this year. Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson next year.

The $61 guaranteed includes the annual roster bonuses, so I guess not all guarantees are the same.

I'm not a huge fan of this, I worry they can't afford to put a solid team everywhere else and there are other contracts coming due.
But the 49ers have been very good with their cap work the past few years that I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Lot of money for Kap but like all young stars you have to pay for future potential.

Quarterbacks these days are getting crazy money and it was best to get Kap locked up now before he possibly has a monster season and would've demanded even more.

The salary cap is projected to go up quite a bit in the coming years (jumped 10 mill this year) so there will be plenty of room to sign other players.

Teams like Seattle, Redskins, Indy, Panthers will be paying their QB's even more so by next year Kap's deal won't be out of place at all.

Something to frighten 49er fans ever more...

Alex Smith was 19-5-1 for the 49ers under Harbaugh; Kaepernick was 17-6 for the team under Harbaugh.

Smith 65% completion rate, 95.6 passer rating; Kaepernick 59% completion rate, 93.8 passer rating.

Essentially, in my opinion, Kaepernick's deal is based entirely off his 3 games against Green Bay. If you take those games out, I very much doubt he gets anywhere close to what he got. He looks like a HOFer against Green Bay, and a very mediocre QB otherwise. I think many QBs could win with that defense. But the Joe Flacco contract essentially now dictates average to mediocre QBs are worth between $17 and $20 million a season. Just insane to think about. Aarod Rodgers should have waited till he was a free agent, he probably would have gotten $30 million a season at least.

The way QBs are getting paid these days is insane, but since contracts aren't guaranteed, this is why money is thrown around so easily. Be tougher to bite if you actually have to honour every cent.

Also, the city-centric logo I find is pretty sharp. Don't mind it since it's the "Golden Super Bowl."

Yeah that's gamble for San Fran. I think Kapernick was better two seasons ago and regressed last season as teams figured out how to get to him by taking away the first read that he was trending to. $60m guaranteed is a lot as is the commitment to the team's offensive leader.

Heck, Wilson had a poorer season last season then 2 year ago, after the first few weeks as teams shut him and his tendencies down. But, like SF, Seattle's defense won a bunch of games with Wilson just having to average. Wilson was able to come through to do enough in the games, and then played his best games since October, in the playoffs and SB, with only one turnover, on the first play of the NFCC. Kapernick turned the ball over the last three times he had the ball in the NFC Championship.

Wilson has a ring, seems (IMO) to be more of a willing leader and student of the game, and that ring will put a premium on the money he gets next offseason, and Seattle will pay it. IMO, the jury seems not totally convinced on Kaepernick. More of an purer athlete than Wilson, but I don't get that "leader" type vibe from the guy.

I think the 49'ers should've waited until some point in the season to see if Kapernick was going to bounce back and be the bonafide leader like they're paying him to be, before opening the vault.

Now some of the real numbers are coming out and the number are not like what was reported in the original leaks.

Quote:
Instead of more than $60 million guaranteed, the actual contract includes only $13.073 million in fully guaranteed money. The rest of the money is guaranteed for injury only.

According to PFT, the only fully guaranteed aspects of the deal are a $12.328 million signing bonus, a base salary of $645,000, and a workout bonus of $100,000 in the first year of the deal.

With those figures, Kaepernick’s salary cap figure in 2014 would be approximate $3.8 million. ....

The rest of the so-called guaranteed money comes in the form of base salaries in 2014-‘17, and part of 2018, which are guaranteed for injury only. In other words, if the 49ers experience buyer’s remorse, they can release Kaepernick and only absorb the remaining prorated money from his signing bonus as a hit on the salary cap.

The deadline for the 49ers to pick up the base salary on Kaepernick’s contract comes on April 1 of each year. His base salaries, according to PFT’s sources are:

2015: $12.4 million
2016: $13.9 million
2017: $16.5 million
2018: $17 million – with $5.2 million guaranteed for injury only by the April 1 deadline.

Then, Kaepernick has non-guaranteed base salaries in 2019 of $18.8 million and, in 2020, of $21 million.

Well new details show that Kaepernick got $12 million dollars and SF got 6 one-year contracts, which I guess works for both sides.

Word around NFL is that when Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson get new deals next year, they will come in between $24-$25 million per year.
As per Adam Schefter. That's rough, makes Kap deal look amazing.

I love Wilson but he is absolutely not worth that. He is a good quarterback but he's not a game breaker - yet. Let's see how this season goes.
