That's the most sane thing I've ever seen on CP in regards to the draft. I wish more posters had this mindset.
Though the annual meltdowns are entertaining at least.

Not necessarily.
Teams that find successes after the first round tend to have more than one second and third rounders. The more shots, the better chance you have of finding a player.

Then again quarter of century of bad management in various reincarnations could make anyone suspicious of the direction.
Although this group of brain trust looks promising for now.

Stay right where we are please Brad and Brian. If Edmonton stay at #3 and draft Draisaitl as expected, no matter who ends up with the 1st and 2nd overall picks, be it Florida and Buffalo, or Toronto, Vancouver, whoever, we will still draft Bennett, Reinhart or Ekblad. I'm confident any of the 3 could go on to become an excellent player for us. There simply isn't value in trading up IMO. The only exception I would make is if we pulled off a deal that was agreed to be very favourable to us. I'm no expert, I couldn't begin to wonder what sort of package we could out together to get the first that wouldn't harm us in the long run. I'm not keen on losing any of the vets, however inconsistent they are. That includes Smid, Jiri, Glencross, Gio etc. I also don't want to trade any of the prospects. The likes of Sven need another year before we get a good idea if his development is progressing as expected or he is going backwards. Take him out of the picture and i don't want to see us trade up by losing an already decent first rounder, a solid 2nd, a 3rd and any of the above players. We have a good group here. Decent vets. Promising prospects. A solid back room team, including Brad, Brian and Bob.
If it was MacKinnon or McDavid available then yes, but the fact Florida and Buffalo are giving them away shows for me that the price we would have to pay to get the first overall IMO just isn't worth it. Let's stay calm for these next few weeks, let all the others squabble over who gets what pick. We keep the 4th, draft a quality player with the minimal amount of fuss and walk away with our dignity intact.

think it's a case of both
I imagine when you have multiple 2nds you're much more willing to make a move in to the 1st
so if he keeps the pick they stockpile asset, if they move up by using the 2nd they aren't leaving a gap of 60+ spots between picks or any less new prospects

Smid + the COL second and early negotiating rights to Cammy is about the best I'd be willing to give up for the top pick. The fourth overall shouldn't be in play, it's already a guaranteed top prospect. If they don't want their pick it's because they want to win now, so maybe it works for them.

Would you trade one of said top prospects for Smid, a 2nd and the rights to Cammalleri?

Nope, which is why I don't think it's going to happen. Quite content with that fourth pick.

Will you still be quite content with that fourth pick if there's a guy the Flames really like and know he won't be available at #4?

Yeah, because although the Flames' first guy, or maybe even second guy is gone, one of the other two guys are a pretty damn awesome consolation prize.
Honestly, the Flames landed in one of the best spots possible.

If I were the Flames, I would be pushing really hard to trade up for the #1 overall. It's rare to have teams who possess the top picks that are open to trade them... I feel the Flames should take advantage of that. Also, defencemen like Ekblad don't grow on trees. It's very difficult in the current market to covet a top pairing defencemen, let alone a young one who has a very high potential. If this means sacrificing some of our forward prospects, I'm all for it. This is going to a very exciting draft that's for sure.

Anything that can be done to make this team better long term should be done.

Is it safe to assume you don't trust Burke and the scouts then? Burke has been pretty good with his high picks. If there is a guy he likes and Burke feels he needs to trade up, Burke is going to try hard to trade up to get him. And given his track record, I am going to trust that Burke knows what he's doing, that's all I am saying. I don't care that the consensus is there is very little between the top 4. 2 or 3 out of the 4 can be busts.
