So what are the prices at fitness NW? WHC is starting to seem like a rip off.

It's definitely worth it and you get to work with kids. If you still have my e-mail from ball then send me an e-mail and I'll forward you my wife's info. She runs the pre-school department and could let you know more details. They are always looking for help.

I know that the downtown location has a smaller pre-school department but there are lots of other positions too. Just go to the front desk and ask for a volunteer form and what positions they might have available.

I've been using the Talisman Centre for the last couple years and I'm still a fan.
It's a pretty reasonable ~60 bucks a month with access to a ton of classes and not to mention some quality swimming.

The Y DT has a great facility for swimming. There are 6 lanes for swimming in the main pool and are zoned off as follows. Slow, Medium and Fast. You could also use the training swimming pool which is for beginners or people who are learning to swim.

I go to Talisman however I'm starting to think about going elsewhere. It's way too busy if you're typically a 6-8pm workout person. Also if you don't have an executive membership the bathrooms are disgusting. Since I got into the exec change room it's actually tolerable being there however it's now 100 bucks a month.

I'm thinking I might check out Pro Bodies in Marda Loop soon.

I go to Work Out World right across from Lets Bowl, gets super busy right after the work day and dies around 6.
the only reason I still go there is because its a cheap monthly rate

I went to the YMCA in saddletowne and might consider switching

I don't understand all the bad reviews WHC seems to get. You don't get the packs of bros working out in groups of 3 or 4 clogging up equipment like you see at MRC or the university and there is almost always a squat rack free at any of the locations I go to (MacLeod, Edgemont, just off 37th st). The bathrooms are always in pristine condition. The cardio equipment all works fine.

Are you new at Edgemont WHC? Other than the past 18 months the bathrooms have been a 15 year wretched disaster.

The amount of ######bags and chochy losers in that place is dumbfounding. Amazingly there seems to be less steroid abuse these days then previously. That place used to be even more brutal.

There annoying trainers are constantly getting in the way. Having their "clients" do annoying exercises in the middle of a walk way or pathway between gym/area segments.

There's always crap lying around. No one picks up after themselves.

It a shady organization that won't let you put a membership on hold unless you pay $35 a month as an "on hold fee" c'mon! That is unless you can get a doctors note. So if you have moved and want to put your membership on hold they'll let you for pretty much a 50% rate. If you can't do that or get a Dr's note then your only option is to cancel. But you have to do it in person and fill out a form. What's that? You want to mail/fax/scan in the form? Nope, form not allowed to leave the club.

There goal is to get as many people to sign up as possible and hopefully you never come back and use the gym. But if you want to cancel or put on hold they'll make that impossible.

Their yoga blows.

They have maybe one decent spin class.

Their water stations have been broken for months (water bottle fill).

Treadmills are often broken.

For the average price of having a gym membership for one year I could buy some pretty good equipment.

Probably not a pool, a steam room, a three lane track, old dudes walking around balls out in the change room, and equipment covered in the sweat of strangers.

I guess that was more of a pro/con list...

Touche.

For a pool I would probably pay $50/month too. But I suspect a lot of people here are going to a gym that doesn't have all that.

To lift weights, for $1000 you can get everything you need.

Oh yeah, I don't disagree. But obviously some don't have room for all that stuff in their house. I would if I could ever get my brother in law to move out of my basement.

For me though cardio equipment is my real draw at a gym. It's easy to mix up your work-out by starting with a different cardio piece before weights. Like ellipticals, stair climbers, treadmills, spin bikes, upright bikes, recumbant bikes, row machines, or just swimming a few laps.

I'm bumping this thread. I'm thinking about joining Goodlife Fitness in McKenzie Towne - does anyone had good or bad experiences with Goodlife? What are the registration fees & monthly costs like?

I work out at Vita Fitness in Bridgeland because my wife is the owner and the format suits me. I've done the train on your own in a big warehouse full of equipment thing before and it wasn't for me; neither was crossfit even though that was closer to what I like.

I like doing olympic lifting, high intensity interval training, powerlifting, gymnastics strength training, spin, yoga... get it all in once place and with good trainers to plan for me and watch what I am doing. The people who come to class are friendly, real people and not overly competitive or part of the aesthetic crowd... just people being fit and having fun doing it.

The people there are some of the laziest and worst parkers in Calgary. It boggles my mind that people who go to that gym for exercise will only do so if they can get one of the first 4 or 5 parking spots. I've seen people drive up and down the two or three rows of parking spots in front of the door waiting for a space to become available even though 3/4's of the parking lot is open. I've seen someone park their MB SUV on the concrete/gravel island between the actual parking spaces and the main roadway because it was right in front of the door. Again, there was plenty of space 6 or 6 spots down.

I go to the Goodlife in Eau Claire and don't mind it. I'm sure each one is different though. I pay $45/month (that includes tax and fees) and will be ending it next month when I take possession of my new place and working out at home.

If anyone wants it, I can transfer the membership to you at Goodlife.

I go to the Goodlife in McKenzie Towne and I like it. I go at 5:30am so parking and crowds aren't an issue.

When I have gone after work or in the evenings it can be brutal finding a parking spot and the classes can fill up quickly.

Glad this thread got bumped, it reminded me to cancel my WHC membership.
